$1 a gallon for gas..its a strong possibilty
the president of jet blue airways is trying to push a bill through congress that would allow us to get gas prices back to around $1/gallon and completely rid our country of our dependance on foreign oil.here is the link to his pdf that summarizes the plan, and i stronly urge you to read it and consider writing your congressman or senator supporting this, politics aside

it is a long read so here's the breakdown
the core of this is coal to oil production, which is actually an old technology...for around $500 billion we can build enough plants in ten years to completely support our oild needs, but companies like jet blue and ge are hesitant to invest this money for fear of the arabs tanking oil prices and they have wasted their investment...all they are asking of the government is a garauntee that if they spend the money they will be insured against losses if the arabs drop oil below the price of what we can produce it for, which is around $35 a barrel..think about it
no needs for arab oil
all oil related taxes would stay inside this country
plants would create numerous jobs

Very nice.

Assuming the technology is really there and at the prices/costs quoted, I can not see how the government can possibly turn down this proposal...

Plus the more debate they have on this, the less chance of outlawing gaming!

Go Jetblue!

$500,000,000,000 ?

But we could attack another 1/2 country with that money -- I dunno about this.

I've got to believe the slag byproduct volume will be enormous. Where does that all go? The sulphur byproduct can be scrubbed out effectively (at a cost), but something tells me the exhaust from burning the fuel is going to have the distinctive 'rotten egg' smell.

We could put the plants in the south. The people stink down there too, so nobody would notice the rotten egg smell.

Obviously the plants would be where the coal is located (to the greatest extent possible). You might have a point about the smell down south - lots of sulphur in the ground water in Fla.

how about sugar cane???

Brazil's new generation of cars and trucks adapted to run on alcohol has just hit the two-million mark, motor industry figures show.

"Flex-fuel" vehicles, which run on any combination of ethanol and petrol, now make up 77% of the Brazilian market.

Brazil has pioneered the use of ethanol derived from sugar-cane as motor fuel.

Ethanol-driven cars have been on sale there for 25 years, but they have been enjoying a revival since flex-fuel models first appeared in March 2003.

Just 48,200 flex-fuel cars were sold in Brazil in 2003, but the total had reached 1.2 million by the end of last year and had since topped two million, the Brazilian motor manufacturers' association Anfavea said.

Return of ethanol

Brazil began its Pro-Alcohol programme more than 20 years ago to promote the use of ethanol as an alternative fuel for cars.

At the time, Brazil had a military government, which wanted to reduce the country's dependence on imported Middle Eastern petroleum after the 1970s oil shocks.

The idea fell out of favour in the 1990s after sugar prices rose and the price of oil fell, while Brazil's state oil company Petrobras discovered new offshore oilfields which reduced the need for imports.

But in 2003, a new generation of cars capable of running on alcohol entered production, thanks to a combination of new technology and tax breaks.

"Flex-fuel" cars attract a purchase tax of 14%, while buyers of their exclusively petrol-powered counterparts are charged 16%.
