St. Pierre Sidelined by Injury; ‘The Prodigy’ to The Rescue

By Thomas Gerbasi

After a groin pull forced top 170 pound contender Georges St. Pierre to withdraw from his September 23rd rematch with UFC welterweight champion Matt Hughes at the Arrowhead Pond in Anaheim, California today, the UFC was faced with a dilemma. Who could possibly challenge the champ on short notice and still be compelling enough to get fight fans excited?

The answer was a no-brainer – the last man to beat Hughes, BJ Penn.

And as one of the top fighters in the world, pound for pound, Penn eagerly accepted the opportunity to make it 2-0 against the premier welterweight of this era, who, for his part, would like nothing better than to settle an old score with Hawaii’s ‘Prodigy’.

In 2004, Penn, a highly regarded lightweight contender at the time, scored one of the biggest upsets in mixed martial arts history when he rose 15 pounds in weight to tackle and beat Hughes in his first-ever welterweight bout. The end came at 4:39 of the first round when Penn forced Hughes to tap out due to a rear-naked choke.

On September 23rd, the rivalry is renewed.

dmmd, Who do have for UFC62, I am going to it this Saturday, and followed you, Hache, and Jake Thompson 6-for-6 to UFC 61, in your thread across the street last month.

Odessa set some pretty low numbers this card, most bouts seem balanced and live..tough card?

Thanks!

Thanks for the words I personally get alot from your old school vegas stories so its cool that you noticed me.

UFC pretty much has the formula down for there live events aside from UFC 61 which was a bore. The first 3-4 fights usually features one guy that the UFC likes and wants to push against some punching bag that they can use later on in a highlite reel.

The semi main events are usually the close matches that can go either way.

The main event is usually a toss up. Sometimes it a close fight between two fighters in there prime and other times its really just a fighter carrying the show like Liddell is here or Hughes against Gracie where I didn't expect a classic fight there either. This UFC is no different it should be a very cool live event.

The two bets I have are

Bonner +236 over Griffen

Yes I know Bonner looked like trash in his last two fights but those were with guys who were looking to take him down to the ground. Girffen will look to trade shots standing up which will give Bonner a punchers chance. Plus Bonner has more at stake here, if he loses this fight he is done in the UFC the name will have worn off and he'll go back to being a nobody whereas Griffen is living high off the hog making apperances and shooting commericals. I also don't think Girffen is that smart of a fighter since in his fight against Oritz he knew his knee was hurting but only once went after it. In my mind the odds are right here. This fight isn't much more than a coin flip with the way these two go at it.

The other fight is

Josh Neer +150 over Nick Diaz

I don't understand how Diaz is the fav here. Diaz is taking this fight on very short notice plus he has lost his last 3 UFC fights against Diego Sanchez, Joe Riggs, and Sean Sherk. While Neer lost his last fight in a decision he has look good in his previous two UFC fights plus he is trained by one of the best trainers in the world in Pat Miletich. This is another coin flip and I also believe the wrong fighter is the fav as well since i can see Neer taking this in a decision.

UFC 63 main event odds are up and I have loaded up on Matt Hughes -144 over BJ Penn. Penn hasn't been the same since he defeated Hughes two years ago plus this is not Penn natural weight he won't be able to go 5 rounds with Hughes. Hughes is a machine....dumb as rocks but a machine the man is built to be a fighter that is all he does where as Penn hasn't done much fighting in two years and wasn't in the best of shape against GSP in his last fight. I also don't think Hughes will take Penn as lightly as he did the first time they meet. This line should really be at the -180 levels. Not that im an expert in such things but Hughes spent the last two years kicking ass and Penn has spent the last two years chilling on a beach.
