Baines will not make it...certainly not first year and very unlikely to ever get in even though his numbers are very respectable....playing most of his career as DH really hurt his chances and no WS rings.

Baines has the numbers , or as close as it gets without getting in...nearly 3000 hits (2866) which has always been automatic...had baines knees held up he would have reached 3000 hits and would have been in automatically...almost 400 homers (386)...(1628) RBI perhaps his most impressive individual career stat....most won't remember Baines being a stellar rightfielder with a very good arm...3 times he ammassed 10 or more assists with a career high of 15 in 1986.

Baines a Md. native played for the White Sox 3 different times and also had two stints in his hometown , Baltimore .

yeah i know and it sucks, he ended his career just short of a few milestones.
needed just 130 hits for 3,000, 15hr for 400, and he was a career .300 hitter until his final couple seasons which brought him down to .290

Actually he wasn't that close to a career .300 batter, some of his better average years were late in his career...If you followed his career you could see this coming, he was so close to some huge milestones but just didn't have enough playing time left at his age to reach those numbers...the strike seasons also cost him .

Just the absolute mark of consistency, despite all his injuries, Baines only had one season over 173 base hits, never hit 30 homers and never scored 100 runs in a season, and still put up those career stats.

It will be very interesting to see if McGwire can slide by, it wont help that Ripken and Gwynn (two squeaky clean players, with tremedous HOF careers) are also on that ballot and are virtual locks.

i can't see McGwire getting in first ballot, and he hasn't helped his cause by going mum to the country.

if he were to go in with those guys, it would just seem odd and I don't even kno if he would like it that way. 2 guys that played the game the right way, and him.

Journey, while i'm not really sure where I stand on the mcguire issue, from what I've seen and heard from HOF voters on espn news and different sports stations there is no way he is getting in first ballot, and I wouldn't be shocked if it takes several years for him to get in, he really did a disservice to himself with his testimony (or lack of one).... Personally, I think I would vote him in 2008.

Why vote him in at all then ?

If you're gonna vote McGwire in , shouldn't he jut get in now? I'm not sure how you can say you would vote him in in 2008 but not 2007?

Take away the steroids and he's Dave Kingman...Canseco was a much better player than McGwire.

I for one think while getting in the HOF is obviously a tremendous honor, being a first ballot HOF is an even higher honor, reserved for the best of the best, that was my reasoning... But like I said, I'm not real sure where I stand with McGuire, your comparison to Kingman may be true...

I hear you...first ballot does give those players the ultimate golden seal of legendary status.

I'm sure he will be happy just to get in at some point after all this...

The thing about McGwire though, his career was on the decline big time before he movd on to St.Louis , nearly retired as his career was bottoming out, batting just above .200 one year and had terrible foot problems 'something' gave him an edge in a very similar fashion as we saw with Bonds ....I believe McGwire abused steroids almost his entire career, but in those STL years he kicked it up 3-4 notches ...

If you see him now days he looks like bean pole.

Shoeless Joe for sure... Rose, while a prick, has payed his dues and needs to get in...
As for Canseco being much better than McGuire, I don't agree. Why??? Because he stole some bases??? McGuire was certainly more feared.

WHAT? Canseco was the best player in baseball for a few years...he could do it all...while he ended up being a clown, he was the best player, Mcgwire was a home run , walk or nothing.

Maybe I am biased because like you said Canseco is a clown, we'll just have to agree to disagree on that one...
