A New York woman was arrested for embezzling over a million dollars to support her lottery addiction.

Annie Donnelly will spend the rest of her life repaying over one million dollars to Great South Bay Surgical Associates. Jerry Prosapio, who used to be addicted himself, says there’s hope for her.

“It’s a stark realization when you do get caught. Part of you inside is hoping you won’t, but then there’s another part of you inside crying that you hope the chase ends.”

Initially, the lottery concept was billed as a safe form of gambling. Today it’s the second largest market in the gambling industry. Chad Hills with Focus on the Family Action explains why.

“Part of the problem with lotteries is that they sell hope. You’ll find lottery ticket sales are the highest in areas of cities and metropolitan areas where the population’s income is lowest.”

And it turns governments into cannibals feeding off the addictions of citizens to fund pet projects. Jeffrey Derevensky is a psychology professor at McGill University.

“Most state governments and the federal government are not putting in a substantial amount of money towards treatment of individuals who are having difficulties.”

It’s estimated that under 20- million dollars a year in the U.S. is spent on treatment, a mere drop in the bucket compared to the millions lost.

That's so true. They sell the dream. As if winning the lottery is the best thing that could possibly ever happen to them.

Never forget Cecil Fielder.

Not to mention Keno. That is legal, but they have a problem with online gambling? Keno causes two other addictions to go with it. Many that are keno addicts are also booze and smoking addicts. From my experiences, the three go hand in hand. Not to mention the horrific odds keno offers.

This is what is wrong and a total hypocrisy.

Not only that, but if they were able to do a demographical breakdown, I suspect that it was show that a significant portion of the sales went to the people who could least afford it.

That's okay though, as long as the proceeds go to the gov't :nohead:

Great points and 100% correct.

Levistep-it will never happen. They're an absolute cash cow for the gov't.

Like JC says, what about the casinos in Officers/Enlisted Men's Clubs that the US runs and operates offshore around the world?

It is really sad going to gas stations and seeing people spend probably their whole paycheck on 20 lottery tickets. I see the same people in the same gas stations weekly. When these people actually win something they turn around and just buy more lottery tickets. The US gov't is the world's biggest bookie...

My old man used to play the 3 and 4 digit WV and Pa daily numbers every single day, and from the time I was 6 years old, until he died when I was 27, used to spend around $100 per day.

I remember him having a few good hits, although he probably didn't tell me about all of them, but would love to have the cash he lost playing the state lotteries.

The carve-out of lotteries and horseracing from the internet anti-gambling bill is the most infuriatingly hypocritical aspect of this proposed legislation.

If a bill gets to the Senate floor for debate next month, stories like these should serve to document this hypocrisy.
