A New York woman was arrested for embezzling over a million dollars to support her lottery addiction.
Annie Donnelly will spend the rest of her life repaying over one million dollars to Great South Bay Surgical Associates. Jerry Prosapio, who used to be addicted himself, says there’s hope for her.
“It’s a stark realization when you do get caught. Part of you inside is hoping you won’t, but then there’s another part of you inside crying that you hope the chase ends.”
Initially, the lottery concept was billed as a safe form of gambling. Today it’s the second largest market in the gambling industry. Chad Hills with Focus on the Family Action explains why.
“Part of the problem with lotteries is that they sell hope. You’ll find lottery ticket sales are the highest in areas of cities and metropolitan areas where the population’s income is lowest.”
And it turns governments into cannibals feeding off the addictions of citizens to fund pet projects. Jeffrey Derevensky is a psychology professor at McGill University.
“Most state governments and the federal government are not putting in a substantial amount of money towards treatment of individuals who are having difficulties.”
It’s estimated that under 20- million dollars a year in the U.S. is spent on treatment, a mere drop in the bucket compared to the millions lost.
