Crazy (and "dirty") Names for Thoroughbreds

Their have been some weird ones over the years. The Jockey Club screens all proposed names, and, I understand, rejects most (an owner must submit multiple names). One owner once made it easy for himself by giving his animal a short, descriptive name: RACE HORSE

You can't use names of great champions, like Man 'o War, Seabiscuit, Secretariat, etc. Also, you can't use names that may be offensive to someone's race, religion, ethnicity, etc.

Or those with scatalogical or sexual reference. But once, years ago, I recall a horse running with a terrific name, one that somehow got past the eagle eyes of the Jockey Club: CUNNING STUNT.

Now imagine a track announcer, in the heat of a race call, reversing a couple of letters on top of both names: "And now, slipping through on the rail between horses, it's STUNNING ------ "

Don't know if it ever happened. Hope so.

And it is Travers Day today, big day for racing. I have a few picks up at the horse racing forum, as do some other great handicappers.

One horse that turned into a stakes winner that got by the JC was Isitingood. I want to say that it might have been one of Mike Pegram's first bigger horses. He always tried to slide things by in his early days.

I remember that horse. I once kept a list of the weird, amusing or sly names, but lost it a long time ago.

Although not dirty, one of my favorite names was that of an old cheap horse that used to run at Penn National back in the day.

Isheiezziorisntshe (is-he-izzy-or-isn't-she)

Iezzi is one of those silly Pennsylvania Dutch names.

I'm a little surprised someone doesn't try what a California driver of Hispanic heritage once did: he got a personalized licence plate that read BREAD 8.

The two words, translated into Spanish, equate more or less to the Mexican slang for vagina.

Eventually someone who knew the language caught on and reported him to the DMV, and they pulled the plate.

I suspect that such droll tricks have been tried in the horse-naming game.

I would like to suggest something similar: Isitindecent.

It refers to a joke that goes something like a guy looking at sex in a porn and asks "is it indecent?" to which the responder replies "I don't know if it's in decent, but it's in good".

Someone will submit that. Maybe one of the horse owners who are rx members. Hopefully the JC doesn't read these posts.

How about a horse named "Win Place and Show"? You could have a little bit of Laurel & Hardy action going at the window.

bettor: I would like Win Place and Show for $50.
window person: Which horse?
bettor: I just told you.
window person: You would to bet win place and show for $50?
bettor: Yes.
windows person: Do you want Win Place and Show to win place or show?
bettor: No. It's Win Place AND Show!

A few years back there was a pretty good allowance-type runner named Blue Magoo, ran a lot in Kentucky. I could never figure how this got past the name Nazis.

One of the best names ever has to be Hoof Hearted.

I saw a race that he was running at and the announcer was screaming his name that sounded like Who Farted. A classic.

Another one I thought was good was a horse that raced at Prairie Meadows whose name was Iams Bound.

You'd have to do it before they're named unless you feel like paying $250 (I think) to the Jockey Club. We just let others name most of the young ones if they don't already have names on their papers.

Winbet,

When Mary Hinge was registered, the same owner had a horse called Jo Blob which unfortunately never ran. I think they were juveniles with Richard Hannon.

Spoonerisms which excaped the censors at the Jockey Club.

A tamer name was Sixtimesanight , or something similar which was a little naughty.

What does Blue Magoo mean? I remember a bar with that name in Warren, OH near where I used to teach. I googled the name and all I get are the horse, the bar and a band.

Was a horse on the NY circuit named Harrass. One day the announcement came over the PA, ladies and gentlemen, in race # 6 scratch Harrass.

Yeah, I remember watching Hoof Hard Ed race in the late 80's at Prairie Meadows. The crowd was all laughs when Ken Miller used to say something like "Hoof Hard Ed, Hoof Hard Ed, Hoof Hard Ed gasses by em' at the wire!".

Oakas - Were you a Prairie Meadows regular or catching the races on simulcast then?

Hey LEYKIS. I live in Iowa, but bet them at an OTB. Have a guy that knows all the trainers and jockeys and used to make a killing at Prairie Meadows.
