Rivers has looked awful, Drew is gone, and San Diego fans could be back to watching the Bolts return to medicrity.

Phillip Rivers is unproven and zero experience, this could be worse than the Ryan Leaf draft pick.

J, you really think he's worse than the Leaf pick?? Basically you have someone thats working on their second year in the system and most of the defenses keying in on L. Tomlinson.

You do not give up a proven QB on a 10-6 team given last years schedule for a guy who has never played a meaningful snap.

Owner couldn't squash his ego and now SD goes back to mediocracy...

I don't think anyone is worse than Leaf...letting Drew Brees go was a bit of a gamble...yeah he was smallish but he was also a guy who was MVP calibur two seasons ago, Rivers could be a complete bust and that's a big risk...they were in a tough spot.

Now I agree with this. Basically the G-men sold the farm for the Rivers-Manning trade so basically they could have gotten below market value for Rivers and rode Brees.

The own picked Rivers.

He demanded Brees go.

There is no way anyone intelligent lets Brees go after the last two seasons he had..

Rivers is a stud, our defense is top shelf, add LT and Gates in the mix and 9 wins is not out of the question.

I got O8.5 -130 at Betjm.

i agree and have spoken about this the past two years...you just don't find NFL QBs who put up MVP years hanging on NFL benches very often.

How bout my thread title, that was catchy! ...corny too- but catchy! :missingte

Rivers has not looked great (especially those fumbles Saturday), but his completion percentage is over 65%. He has one TD pass and thrown one brutal interception.

Rivers is going to be handing off 40 times and throwing a bunch of short passes. I'm far more concerned with the offensive line than the QB play. The chargers did little to address that issue in the off-season knowing full well Oben may not be able to start the season. expecting a rookie tackle to protect the QB's blind side is rediculous. Now they are playing the 4th stringer at left tackle. Look for a lot of run right.

While I hated seeing brees leave for nothing, he is prone to throwing interceptions in the red zone. Everyone knows marty's ass is on the line, but if this team doesn't make the playoffs, AJ's ass has to be on the line too. The QB and OL situation is all on him.

I think the Chargers go 10-6.

Would think reading this thread this team was 12-4 or better last season.

They were 9-7...nothing special about this team last season.

Rivers has talent no doubt. Gonna take him a year or two more to read defenses. I think SD should have kept Brees for 1 more year. Probably impossible though.

That's somewhat of a surface appraisal. But considering the following: They played the most difficult schedule in the NFL last year and beat three playoff teams on the road (NE, Washington, and Indy). They played four teams coming off a bye. They lost four games in the last few minutes, which is typical martyball (Dallas, Denver, Pittsburgh, Philly). They played four games on the east coast (5 if you include Indy).

9-7 is a decent record considering the above. This year is much easier with the NFC west on the slate, two games against Oakland, plus Buffalo, Cleveland, baltimore and tennessee.

Was at both home pre-season games and couldn't have been less impressed with Rivers. He is Brutal with a capital B. To be fair, I was pissed when they let Brees go, but watching objectively, Rivers stinks. He is so slow to drop back from center, so indecisive in his reads, and he doesn't look down the field. We don't have burners for WR's to begin with and teams are going to clamp down on all of this dinking and dunking he has been doing. His % might be high but I'd rather have a lower % and less horizontal throws. This team is good enough to get to the SB every other poistion on the field. It's a shame that Rivers will hold the Bolts back and he will.
Not an easy assignment either at Oak on Mon night for his 1st game. The Chargers need to beat Oak if they are going to get to 10 or 11 wins.

I'll accept that about Rivers, I only saw the GB game and he looked sharp to me. I still think he will be OK. But there is no way this is a superbowl O-line, even with Oben healthy. It isn't even an average line.
