Police search house of local poker winner

San Antonio police Tuesday night searched a home owned by Richard Lee, the recent winner of nearly $3 million at the World Series of Poker, for evidence of an extensive illegal Internet gambling operation.

"This operation is the largest here in San Antonio," said police spokesman Joe Rios, who confirmed the search warrant was served on a Shavano Park home in the 100 block of Geddington Street.

According to Bexar County Appraisal District tax records, the home belongs to a Richard Lee, who TV reports and a police source said is the same Richard Lee that placed sixth at the World Series of Poker three weeks ago.

Police have investigated the home for months, Rios said, before procuring enough evidence to secure the search warrant.

Inside the home, they found dozens of receipts for deposits on payouts from gambling proceeds, Rios said.

"We're talking payouts well over $500,000," he said. "It was a pretty well-oiled machine they were running out here."

Although one of several houses searched, Rios called the home owned by Lee the "brains or the nerve center of the operation."

A money-counting machine; five Lexus cars, including two sports utility vehicles and three sedans; multiple plasma-screen TVs; and a large amount of cash were seized, he said.

No one was arrested, Rios said, "although now that we have found the evidence, we can move forward."

What type of online gambling operation was he running?

Are they saying they were placing bets, or were they booking?

Sounds like a major bookmaking operation certainly.

With all that money...would he really be dumb enough to have the main operation in his own house?

I could have sworn someone was talking about him booking during the WSOP. Probably was the tip off.

Richard Lee Illegal Bookmaking Update
05 Sep 06

The San Antonio Express reported that Lee has been under surveillance by the Vice Squad since February. Vice Squad members have trailed Lee and searched his garbage, bank accounts and phone records.

According to an affidavit, Lee, AKA the "Chinaman," operated an illegal betting operation including www.betbsbnow.com, a local website which pretended to be offshore.

Lee is also accused of employing runners who allegedly took bets and collected money.

Wasn't betbsbnow.com located in Costa Rica? :icon_conf

And if the Road Warrior says it, it must be true..

I used to know a guy from Texas that booked NFl only. He would come down here and set up shop, contact his players and get rollin till Febuary. He had clients he's booked for 20+ years. Never collected till the end of the season and then it was time to anti up. Sometimes the clients would be in the hole so big he would tell the players to pay half in one shot and he will forget the other half....... He always played poker in the off season all over the states. Hope this was not him in the article.
