Rest of the world is on the verge of catching up completely...international teams have far more experience and get to practice/play with each other way more than the U.S. team does. Not to mention that the talent discrepancy has dwindled when it comes to the top international teams. If the U.S. is lucky enough to win today(not sure they will), they'll have their hands full with Spain/Argentina, easily the class of the world scene.

You can tell that the international teams get the concept of team ball and stress it much more than the U.S. team. They play within themselves and understand mismatches and how to break down a team's defense throw movement and screens. On paper, Greece shouldn't be able to compete. But their ability to play as a team and be patient on offense has been the difference.

There is no talent discrepcancy. NBA and American Socut have ruined our Nations hoops. We simple arent half as good as we think. Also nice to see these EURO players SHINE THE NBA ON, for better leauges.

Athletically USA is still 100 times more superior than any international team but skills wise (shooting, teamwork, etc) the rest of the world is definitely with us.

The USA thought just by changing a few things, having "tryouts" and getting players to commit for 3 years they could waltz through international competition. They still have the same problems, little chemistry or outside shooting. They'll be good when the Olympics come, but this was bound to happen.
Funny thing is John Thompson called Greece to beat the US or at least give them a great game all week on talk radio.

Great post.

I agree with everything else you said except the line about playing together.

That is ESPN's excuse and nothing else. The Greek players not only play on different teams, they play in different leagues in different countries. One player doesn't even see the other person play during the year, let alone actually play against them.

They do play the same style of ball, and do represent the National team. They are much more cohesive than our All Star attempts. Most of the International teams players are scattered all over the globe. But they come back home to beat up on the US. Argentina had 3 NBA players when they won it all in 2004, and yet they had played with that team extensively. Today's recommended reading is Basketball for Dummies. Read this book, watch the international games and you can easily see why we can't win, even with an extra step. I would think those same guys played for that same national team and practiced every year they came together. If it was not for Melo this year's squad would have been the worst ever. I guess coach K only owns officials in the ACC.

I saw it open at -11. Crept all the way up to -13. Highest $L I saw +6.50. A lot of books avoided it, but with all the Go USA homers, I would book this team til the cows came home. I took cheaper +12 1/2 -.05. Whiffed on $L. I just did not see it as I also had Greece back in 2004 and they kept it close, in Athens. But this US squad is weaker than even I thought. They were a question mark until facing one of the big three. Now they get an angry Argentina, who was the last gold winner.

Those late nighters mess up my sleep. I could not even stay up until post, so it might have crept even higher. My last check was around 45 minutes to go. Could not find it on DB so had to refresh books. Books are crying because of this was primetime they would have cleaned up. Go USA!
