Have always wondered what the internet is like outside the US. I have heard the US is rather backward when it comes to providing bandwith at a reasonable price. Is this true?
How is the internet in your country? How do you subscribe? How much does it cost? What is the bandwith? Is it reliable?

Here in my state, I pay about $80 (comcast) for cable tv and cable broadband internet. Not exactly a bargain. It's fairly fast, thought I don't have much to compare it to. It is reliable. We have an outage every other month, usually late at night, for about a half an hour. If you call them up, you can get a credit on your bill for that day.

Here is a site for testing speed. My results were 5976 kbps download and 346 kbps upload.

cable is normally capable of much faster speeds than DSL buddy, if its working fine for you right now I would leave it alone

In the rest of America (as in American continent) prices are much slower in the States and normally much faster speeds are available

In Europe and some parts of Asia (like Japan or South Korea) you can get ridiculous speeds such as 100 Mbps (at least to the Central Office or Point of Presence of the provider)

In terms of redundancy to 'the rest of the World' the States is well equipped , here in CR there are only two ways out of here while in the States you might have dozens of links to Europe etc

The problem in the States seems to be (IMHO) the density of population, you have vast unpopulated areas in many places , that means that its not very effective cost wise for a provider to set up all the equipment required as they wont get many customers.

In Japan where you probably have 1000 people in the very block where you live........you have a bunch of potential customers

I am paying 29 Euro per month for my 16000 kbps Dsl line (including a flatrate). It is pretty fast. Furthermore VOIP calls (except for calls to cellular phones) are free. It depends on your provider which extras (such as free movies etc) you get. Prices are going down nearly every week. DSL modems etc are for free. Currently they are developing new lines and services here in Germany for providing even faster DSL lines.

Having a fast DSL line is pretty important for me. By using the tvu player I am able to watch ABC, ESPN, ESPN 2 and many more US stations via the internet.
