Missile fired at McCain escort helicopter during European visit

A missile was fired at a helicopter escorting Sen. John McCain during a visit to the Republic of Georgia last week.

A statement from that nation’s interior ministry says the surface-to-air missile was aimed at a chopper involved in a visit of a U.S. Senate delegation to the former Soviet republic. McCain was mentioned as the leader of the group.

The ministry statement claims American officials were notified of the incident. State Dept. spokeswoman Joanne Moore told the Associated Press she had no information about the reported attack.

The president of Georgia, Mikhail Saakashvili, is a strong ally of the U.S. He is also trying to re-establish control over two regions of the country trying to break away from the central government.

Word of this missile launch was made as part of a statement about a Sunday attack on a helicopter carrying Georgia’s defense minister. His aircraft was damaged by large-caliber machine gun fire and forced to make an emergency landing. No one was injured.

Good question. I would wager a security hush. Perhaps they expect more attacks? Didn't want to give the attackers any info on success or failure?

Gave this some more thought. Why? Simply because journalism is crap these days. 90% useless cornflake crap.

Still may have been something deeper? Again, good question.

Because the goverment didn't want it to be big news. Goverment officals work in the control rooms at mainstream media headquarters. This is fact. They decide to cover the stories which will help manipulate the public and brainwash them into following their agenda. This, is not one of them. Therefore it will get minimal coverage by the mainstream media.

Funny how things work.

This statement would be right on the money if you substituted the word "LIBERALS" for where you used the word "GOVERNMENT".

Ignorance is bliss. Goverment officals are not liberals, nor are they conservatives. They are smart enough not to buy into that big illusion.

True dat, but let us not just jump all over their bandwagon. Some of these guys are the cold war spiders screwing up our foreign policy from unelected unfireable postions. Not a conspiracy. It's truth. Cheney and his cohorts come from these dark regions.

Also let us not say that all media is liberal. I will not argue that there is a general bias towards liberality in the media, but it is not wholly true given such esteemed news propaganda outlets as Fox.

You must be in a neverending state of blissfulness then.

Youre attempting to box thousands of "government officials" into some kind of homogenous group? How ignorant can one get.

Now, I know there are some polls out there saying this man has a 32% approval rating. But guys like us, we don't pay attention to the polls. We know that polls are just a collection of statistics that reflect what people are thinking in "reality." And reality has a well-known liberal bias.

Of course. They aren't living under the illusion most of us are. Since they are propaganda experts they aren't going to buy into the liberal/conservative spin and support one side blindly. For example, Several officers from the US Army's 4th psychological operations Group at Ft. Bragg worked in News division at CNN's Atlanta headquarters.

These indiviuals work for the goverment and their goal is to mold the publics mind. Not spew liberal/conservative bullshit. Public opinion is based on what mainstream media feeds the public. If the media pays less attention to a story the public will not be concerned. Hell, they can talk about Jessica Simpsons voice cracking, or what Tom Cruise had for dinner and ten million americans will be talking about it. They are literally molding us into zombies. Their thoughts become ours. Anyone who knows how mind manipulation is conducted knows this.

Perfect example is pentagon wanting to monitor the media coming out of iraq.

I bet the majority of you have never heard of this through the mainstream media? I wonder why. The goverment doesn't want us to know, Obviously, therefore the mainstream media isn't covering it. They will never talk about a serious issue unless they have to. They stick to flag burning and gay marriage for a reason.

Cause may be it did not happen. It was just wish full thinking on someone part. Probable cause it was a slow news day until the crocodile man died tragically.
Just my opinion.

Well it turns out it's not a big story because there is no story:

Georgia: McCain's Copter Not Targeted
September 05, 2006 20 06 GMT

http://www.stratfor.com/products/pr...selected=Situation Reports&sitrep=1&id=274386

A helicopter carrying a U.S. Senate delegation led by Sen. John McCain was not fired at on Aug. 28, the U.S. Embassy in Tbilisi, Georgia, said Sept. 5, contradicting initial reports. An investigation by the Georgian government and the FBI reported that another helicopter was the intended target of a surface-to-air missile fired from South Ossetia.

A thorough investigation by Georgia's Ministry of Internal Affairs and the U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has confirmed that, contrary to initial reports, the helicopter transporting a U.S. Senate Delegation led by Senator John McCain was not fired at on August 28, the U.S. Embassy in Tbilisi said on September 5.

“It appears that another helicopter that was on the way from Tbilisi to join the Senate delegation helicopters in western Georgia was the intended target of the missile. Representatives of the FBI cooperated with the Georgian Government from the onset of the investigation of the incident,” a U.S. Embassy statement reads.

The Georgian Ministry of Internal Affairs said on September 3 that an escort helicopter, accompanying a second helicopter with President Saakashvili and a group of visiting U.S. Senators on board, was targeted by an antiaircraft missile. Saakashvili and the U.S. senators were en route to the Svaneti region in northwest Georgia.

“A Strela-2 anti-aircraft missile was fired at the helicopter over the village of Avnevi [breakaway South Ossetia]. The shell exploded a close distance from the helicopter,” the MIA said, adding that the exploded shell was found and handed over to the U.S. side for further investigation.
