My brother's car was stolen a couple days ago. Stolen from the driveway of my mom's house. So crazy. It was a Volkswagon Passat. He filed a police report and called the insurance company.

What usually happens next? Someone said if that after 30 days if they don't find the car the insurance company will give him a check of the value of the car. Right?

Also if you or someone you know has had their car stolen did they ever recover it?

Still can't believe it happened.

my first car was stolen. It was recovered after a high speed pursuit ending in an arrest. I had to pick it up at an impound lot and pay the towing and storage. It had a smashed quarterpanel, 3 flat tires, 2 bent rims, and a bent control arm. I got nothing because it wasn't fully covered.

Had an '82 firebird stolen in 1989 while delivering pizza in the snow as I left it running. I saw it going and chased after it, I threw a snowball at it, it was found 2 days later with no harm done just a small cheese pizza gone.

Key was stolen out of another car in the same driveway. They went into the first car looking for who knows what. Came across the keys in the glove compartment and drove off with the other car. Yeah I know that's not smart. It wasn't me that did that if you're wondering too.

About 10 years ago, my car was stolen in the middle of the night. Back then I lived in an apartment complex. I reported it stolen to the police but it was found the next morning. The car was parked in a different part of the complex and had two doors removed from it and the ignition popped.

No other damage, but my car was in the shop over a month because to put new doors on a bunch of other stuff had to happen - power windows re-done, etc. And I was still under New Jersey insurance at the time with a $1500 deductible that I got stuck paying plus another $100-200 for rental charges since the rental car was only covered for 30 days. It sucked.

Yes, after 30 days, they will pay him the "fair market value" - his deductable.

Almost every insurance company will offer less than fair value. If it's worth $30000 they'll offer $25,000.

Before he accepts their offer, make sure to look up the value at kbb.com and with similar cars at cars.com or the like.

If he disagrees with the insurance company, different states have different rules. In Ohio, the rules says both parties can hire an appraiser and they will decide the value. I paid $180 for an appraiser and ended up with $7900 more than the insurance company initially offered me.

Yeah I had a datsun 240z, they stole it at the phillies game, and they crashed it into a fence about 200 yards away, the cops recovered it as I stood in the parking lot in total dismay.
