[FONT=arial,geneva,helve,sans-serif]Majority Leader Bill Frist says he has a plan to bring to the floor a bill that would prohibit most forms of Internet gambling.

With the click of a mouse, you can access a virtual casino in your living room. But, before you log on, David Robertson with the National Coalition Against Legalized Gambling wants to deal you some advice.

“Internet gambling needs to be recognized as the most addictive form of gambling. Sixty-five percent of those who gamble on the Internet become addicted.”

Right now, Internet gambling is illegal in the U.S., but the Department of Justice is hesitant to confront the issue because the language is too gray. Focus on the Family Action Gambling Analyst, Chad Hills, says that’s why passage of the Internet Gambling Bill, HR 4411, is so important.

“This bill would clarify that language, it would prohibit illegal off-shore Internet gambling and it would give the DOJ the teeth that they need to prosecute illegal Internet gambling.”

The bill passed in the House by a tremendous majority; the Senate is expected to do the same if given the opportunity.

“Contact the Senate Majority Leader and urge him to bring this issue to the floor. He has already said in his speech to the President that he intends to do so, but he needs encouragement to keep this on the autumn agenda.”

If the bill makes it to the Senate floor and passes, President Bush has promised to sign it into law.

"65% of those who gamble online become addicted."

That is hands down the most ridiculous statement I have ever heard in my life.

I just love the "It's addictive so let's ban it" mentality.

If this is the case, time to bring back prohibition and also outlaw cigarettes. That would be fine with me since I don't drink or smoke, but I, unlike these fucking pukes in our government, realize that other people do enjoy these things and I have no right to push my ways upon them.

And I don't recall the last time someone made a sports bet online and then went out and ran a red light and killed a family of 5. But, I'm sure that's happened with alcohol, and it's not under threat of being banned. But let's ban onling gambling because it's addictive. . .

And nevermind that a majority of the voters don't want it banned. Fuck that. I'm a politician and I will vote the way MY own personal agenda leads me. Representative government? Consitituents? WTF is that? I AM YOUR MORAL LEADER, just so long as it's not a vote against something that I don't do myself, I'll vote to ban it.

Is it any wonder we hate our politicians so much?

You're 100% right scott. This is the most infuriating aspect of the legislation.

It also dawned on me that this legislation may be one of the few bills the Senate has a shot at passing before the election. Incumbents are being attacked for not getting anything done and an internet gambling law could help them defend against this.

Guys....relax....internet gambling is already illegal in the USA; this bill is redundant. We are not gambling with US companies; Pinnacle, Olympic, et al are offshore for that very reason. The US govt will not be able to stop internet gambling; they can make it more difficult but facing difficulties builds strength and the offshore internet gambling industry will come out stronger for facing these difficulties.

good point, kwalder. It's the transacting that has all of us concerned. if they shut down neteller and firepay, it will certainly hurt.

Fedex checks are still a possibility, and I don't know what will happen with that, but the whole landscape will change. Don't forget that boards like this might not exist any more since the ad revenue would wilt.

Some Encouraging News, Kwalder

Excerpt from above article:

4-Week agenda
The Senate returned Tuesday and the House returns today for a four-week session before Congress goes into recess for the November elections.

In that time, Congress is likely to complete:

• A defense spending bill for fiscal 2007 beginning Oct. 1.

• A fiscal 2007 spending bill for the Department of Homeland Security.

• A temporary funding bill for most domestic programs.

• Senate confirmation of Andrew von Eschenbach as commissioner of the Food and Drug Administration.

• A new legal framework for holding and trying terrorists after the Supreme Court's rejection of the current military tribunal system.

• New legal authority for the National Security Agency's warrantless wiretapping of terrorism suspects.

• Hearings on corrosion along BP's oil pipeline in Alaska.

The Senate and/or House might consider:

• Senate confirmation of John Bolton as U.S. ambassador to the United Nations.

• Legislation to cut estate taxes, raise the minimum wage and extend expiring tax breaks for business research and college tuition.

• A bill that only extends the expiring business research and tuition tax breaks.

• A final bill funding military construction and veterans programs.

• Legislation to make permanent the $1,000 child tax credit and permanently end the so-called marriage penalty. Both are part of earlier tax bills that expire in 2010.

• Legislation prohibiting the slaughter of horses for human consumption.

Likely not to get final action until a lame-duck session after the election, if then:

• Immigration overhaul.

• Legislation to expand offshore drilling in the Gulf of Mexico.

• Spending bills for most domestic programs.

• Lobbying reform.

• A line-item veto for the president and other measures to restrict lawmakers' ability to provide funds for projects not sought by the president.

kwalder,
I used to used credit cards....but the feds shut them down.
Then I used Paypal, but they stopped that also.
Then I used Western Union, but they stopped that too.

Are you starting to see a pattern here, kwalder?

Internet betting has always been illegal in the USA, just ask Jay Cohen. That's why these bookies have set up shop offshore, where internet betting is NOT illegal(sorry about the double neg). This prosecution of offshore internet betting has not been just a recent phenomenon; the books have had ample warning that the US Govt would do anything and everything in their considerable power to stop or at least curtail offshore internet gambling. The books/bookies have become complacent; travelling through the USA is ASFL ridiculous. The books need to be working on a funding solution that the US govt can not stop. You're right, kwalder, in thinking that is the only thing the feds will be able to do to try and stop internet gambling....they're not going to come into my house and stop me from placing bets over my computer...public opinion would never let that occur! This gambling bill will attempt to curtail the funding provisions utilized now by the offshore books; but the banking industry has already disassociated itself with actually doing the enforcement of this bill; and the offshore internet betting can come up with alternate funding provisions, if they put their mind and efforts to the problem. This bill may be exactly what the offshore internet betting industry needs to strengthen it, and then, when this bill doesn't work to stop internet gambling, comes the real problem for the offshores...legalization, taxation, and regulation!

Doug, I understand your point that the offshore industry adapts to new obstacles and its US customers do so as well.

However, there is a point at which the recreational gambler such as myself will be willing to work around the US banking system to send and receive funds with a book. This law makes it illegal for any "financial transaction provider" or "money transmitting business" to do business with an offshore book. It even addresses the "intermediate routing" of transactions for gambling purposes. I agree that today's banking system is not prepared to completely enforce such a law, but it can identify companies like Neteller or Firepay and prohibit banks from doing business with them.

Also ,if HR4411 gets passed, HR4777 (gambler prohibition) is waiting in the House.

Frist has to give lip service about this to keep his fundy co-conspirators happy. I don't think the liklihood of this getting to the floor--let alone passing--has changed one iota...

kwalder,
So what you're saying is that if this bill passes you won't gamble with offshore books? OK, that's fine....but don't expect the offshore internet gambling industry to just crumble. It has always been illegal to bet on sports....has that ever stopped sports betting? I also hope, like you do that this bill does not pass. But in a certain sense it's almost better if it does pass because evidently our govt is too stupid to realize that like drinking alcohol, they can not stop it. When the govt finally comes to this realization, then legalization of internet sports betting will occur. That is the inevitable conclusion to this saga, because gambling can not be stopped. They can make it illegal, like I've said, it's been illegal all along in this country, but the govt can not stop it.

It still looks like the same old song -- it's illegal to "take a bet" (the bookie's position) but not probable to sucessfully prosecute the person who places that bet (the player).

So, the offshore book's --- lose the U.S. travel brochures and all goes right along. Maybe acct. funding is a little slower but still can comfortably get'er done.
