Here in the state of Oregon we have a DEQ (department of enviromental quality) that is worthless and a parasite on the average motorist.

The other day I had the pleasure of going down and running thru the bi-anual DEQ gauntlet. I arrive about 3:30 pm and quickly notice a line to get in line. You must first pass the gate master before having your vehicle inspected. What does mr. gatemaster do? He wears a bright vest and asked me if I had my papers from the DMV. The papers are not neccessary for inspection. He then directs me to go wait in a certain line. That part is so confusing. Good thing he is there getting his $15 an hour to help me with those difficult tasks. When the lines are all backed up, mr. gatemaster just hangs out in his little shack sitting on a chair probably listening to the radio or watching tv. I coudn't see inside. 6 minutes gone and mr. gatemaster orders me to lane #3. I watched him actually walk around his little shack each time and make sure people go in the line HE tells them to. So I meander around to lane #3 eager to start the waiting game. There are a total of 4 lanes. There are about 8 cars in front of me and I estimate about a half hour until my turn. 5 minutes later, move up on car space. 5 minutes later move up another car space. I then sit at this spot for a freakin half hour. A half an hour! Cars in all lanes around me are moving every 5 to 8 minutes. To sum it all up, I spent an hour and a half before I was out of there. My old Toyota passed no problem just like it did 2 years ago and 2 years before that.

Question: why should any car 5 years old or newer ever go thru the DEQ?
Why should we have a DEQ? It is in the motorist's best interests to have a tuned up and efficient vehicle. If you believe the DEQ is neccessary, why not have the private sector administer the test?

The DEQ dinosaur of today is like the energizer bunny: it just keeps on going and going down the road of useless, outdated, and inefficient bureaucracies (sp).

Excuse my rant. I just hate seeing the motorist getting screwed at every turn in the road.
