Crazy to think 9/11/2001 was five years ago. It feels like a blur for me. Share you thoughts and where you were or what you were doing when you heard the news.

I was in bed still living at home when my dad walked into to tell me a plane hit the World Trade center. Being half awake I didn't believe it till I woke up and turned on the tv to see the first WTC on fire. Then it turned into disbelief as the towers crumbled. It felt so surreal. Like it was a scene out of a movie. Glued to the tv all day long as many were. Went to work that day (restaurant) but it was extrememly slow and those who came in just shared what they had heard on the news.

I've been to the site of the World Trade center and the silence there speaks louder than any memorial I've ever been. Just standing there and knowning that five years ago today there was panic and fear going on for those inside the building. Sadly many of them jumped to their deaths so they went on their own terms instead of letting the fires consume them.

My prayers go out to the victims who lost their lives that day.

I was in my 10th grade classroom when one teacher came into the room and whispered something to my teacher and then he explained to us. Our school was actually then on lock down(for some dumb reason, like the fucking terrorists were outside), but thats where I was.

I was teaching 6th grade. Assistant principal came to my door and gave me vague details. Parents started coming to school to pick up their kids. I didn't really know what happened until about 2 in the afternoon because I was in class and they wouldn't share details. I went over my girlfriend's house after school and it was one of the last times I talked to her.

I thought it was longer than 5 years ago to tell the truth. Seems a lifetime ago to me, but that doesn't mean I will forget.

We will be observing a minute of silence at 9:11 tommorrow in the book. Some things are more important to me than others. I urge others to do the same, if at all possible.

I'm going to watch the news in the morning to see the tribute at 9:11am. Thanks for sharing where you were.

I flew home from Tampa late on Sept. 10 2001. I had been down there betting on football games on the Suncruz gambling ship there that went out to international waters. I had the next day off from work and when I woke up I saw the nasty details.

I know I will be chastised for this remark...but folks its time to move on in your life...its fine to remember and understand why 9/11 happened...but come on...I want you all to stop and reflect upon my father who died some 20 years ago... and reflect upon my mother who passed some 30 years ago...and reflect upon my first dog who died when I was 8...and my pet lizard who passed and my grandmother and grandfather...you all have similar lives...LOOK FOLKS...IT WAS NOT GOOD...IT HAPPENED AND YOU MUST MOVE ON...nobody likes the bad side of life...but its real and it will happen again and again and again...when I die please wear a patch for me because I'm just as important as any FDNY who died doing the job they elected to pursue...AND SO ARE YOU...for whatever you do...

I was walking out the door to head to the airport to spend three weeks in Europe starting in Greece. My GF called as I was about to leave and said turn on the TV....

I didn't get off the couch for a day and I didn't unpack my bags for a week.

i was sleeping (don't forget it happened around 5:30A in CA). i woke up to Tony Bruno on the radio saying "We are at War" and thinking "what the hell did he just say"

i went inside to watch TV and then saw what i saw

called one of my best friends. woke him up. told him to turn on the TV. he asked "what channel" and i told him it really didn't matter - whichever one he chose wouldn't make a difference

Was on the 8:18 train from Seaford Ny to Penn Station.Made it as far as Woodside with no idea what happened until someone sitting across from us let us know there was a "accident". Next day i quit my job in the city and have not been back since September 12th 2001........

Lost 2 good friends from high school in that mess (only pair of brothers to die in the trade centers) Timothy and Thomas Haskell as well as another friend. Rest in peace guys:Sad Face:

Did it change my life???............I grew up (and lived)in Ny for 34 years and now live in a SMALL, SMALL town in the N. Idaho mountains(could not expose my small children to that again). Did i give in to the fear? Hell Yeah......Would i go back? Hell No......

and my pet lizard who passed .

You sir are a first class IDIOT! You equate the deaths of people that gave their lives to help others to that of a pet lizard???:pucking:

And saying that you are just as important/heroic as the FDNY guys who knowingly walked to their deaths to help people they did not know is a joke as well.

Would you have done that? I admit i would not have/could not have. Does that make them better people then me? Hell yes........

You also mentioned that that you had loved ones, pets etc that died. Were any of them murdered?? Did you have to deal with losing someone close to you and never having full closure because they never found the body or even body parts? I thought not

So do yourself a favor and shut your fucking mouth and don't tell us to "get over it" you punk.Go mourn your lizard somewhere else:finger:

Small world! Grew up right on the Massapequa/Seaford border (by tackapusha).Matter of fact Tommy Haskell (picture above)lived his last years in Massapequa. Didn't go out much at night but I used to go Mulcahy's in wantagh to watch football on the weekends in the pre-directv days. I miss the area still and really miss the food, (Carribean place in Amityville on 110 was my favorite). All our family is still there as well as our friends. I think we were the only ones from our (wife and myself) "circles" to leave New York. Everyone there has the "Born on Long island, Die on long island" mode of thinking.....

First thanks vermon for putting my thoughts into words.

I was filling out a college application with the TV on mute. I happened to look up and see the camera zooming in on what looked like a road with tar on it and smoke coming off of it. When they zoomed out I saw it was a building- the WTC?!!!!!!!!! I was glued to the tv the rest of the day immobile and stunned when I watched the second plane hit the building live. It was then I knew someone was doing this on purpose, then I was pissed.

that is so true with the mode of thinking, now the carribean place on 110 I am not sure of. their was a nice small restaurant on merrick road just before route 110 ( where they had yoga classes upstairs) not sure if you recall it,

tackapusha park...lol have not said that in a longtime they have that bikepath that goes all the way up to bethpage park..

anyways i just a quick google search on thomas haskell

brings back that empty hollow feeling i get when i was reading some of the threads

Yeah, I have been feeling that hollow feeling as well with all the talk on the news the last 2 weeks building up to it.

I remember the night before it happened i went to bed feeling bad that Ed McCaffery's career might be over (some might remember he was badly injured) in that monday night game. needless to say only less then 9 hours later there would be a whole lot more to worry about. That still sticks with me to this day how one's world can change in the drop of a dime..

Who cares where we were? We can honor those who died and those who were heroes on that day, but just don't get why it matters where we were and why you get upset when someone points out that at some point this will just have to be a sad memory. Lots of the victims' family members have said so themselves. One woman said she feels like all the media coverage and anniversary ceremonies make it feel like she attends her husband's funeral annually and that isn't right. A simple moment of silence should do. Anything more and it just seems to devolve into political spin.
