September 13, 2006 2:58 pm — ORCHARD PARK – The Buffalo Bills placed veteran free safety Troy Vincent on injured reserved today with a hamstring injury, ending the 15-year veteran's season.
The surprise move shocked many players in the locker room. Vincent, a five-time Pro Bowler, was injured early in the first quarter of last Sunday's loss at New England and it's known that the injury isn't serious enough to keep Vincent sidelined more than two to three weeks.
Linebacker Takeo Spikes, who also injured his hamstring in the game on the same series, called the move baffling and said it signals that the coaches are making this a rebuilding season, much to his dismay.
Without Vincent, rookie Ko Simpson slides into the starting lineup alongside fellow rookie Donte Whitner, who plays strong safety. A player is expected to be signed to take Vincent's place on the depth chart.
Spikes did not participate in practice today and said his status for Sunday's game at Miami is day to day.
He was able to do some light jogging.
Spikes is already feeling his way back onto the field after missing the final 13 games last season with a torn right Achilles’ tendon. His injured hamstring is the same leg. If he can't play, rookie Keith Ellison would take his place, or veteran Mario Haggan.
Spikes and Vincent have started a combined 312 NFL games and have played in a combined seven Pro Bowls.
Veteran free agent strong safety Matt Bowen remains sidelined with a bone bruise on his lower right leg suffered in the preseason.
Tackle Walter Smith was signed to the practice squad and tackle Robin Meadow was released. Smith, 6-9, 320, played at North Carolina A & T and was in training camp with Cleveland. <table style="border: 1px solid rgb(153, 153, 153);" bgcolor="#fcfcfc" border="0" cellpadding="8" cellspacing="0" width="350"><tbody><tr><td>
