Online gambling to become part of defense bill?
Frist trying to piggyback credit card ban on military funding authorization

Updated: 1 hour, 12 minutes ago
WASHINGTON - Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist is trying use a bill authorizing U.S. military operations, including in Iraq and Afghanistan, to prohibit people from using credit cards to settle Internet gambling debts.

Frist, R-Tenn., and his aides have been meeting with other lawmakers and officials in both the House and Senate to get the measure attached to a compromise Defense Department authorization bill, according to a Senate GOP leadership aide.

The House passed a version of the Internet gambling measure in July, but the Senate has taken no action on similar legislation. Neither of the defense bills passed by the House and Senate mention it.

Frist is pushing for an approach that isn’t quite as sweeping as the House measure, said the leadership aide and lobbyists following the issue. All spoke on condition of anonymity because of the ongoing negotiations.

Frist, eyeing a 2008 presidential bid, recently discussed the online gambling measure in the politically important state of Iowa. He also called it a legislative priority in a recent speech on the Senate floor.

The measure’s supporters include the National Football League as well as conservative and antigambling groups. Some banking groups are lobbying against it.

Federal officials have made recent arrests involving offshore companies operating Internet gambling sites. The Internet gambling industry is headquartered almost entirely outside the United States although many of its customers live in the U.S.

The bills authorizing defense programs are: S.2507 and H.R.5122.

these scumbag politicians always try to intertwine their hidden agendas onto other bills. this is not surprising. when clinton was in office theres was a major disaster in a city and they ask for federal funds. now clinton already surveyed the damage and visited that city to meet local leaders. upon knowing that he was going to sign some of these scumbag pols tried attaching some of their own bullshit legislations to that relief bill. clinton didnt sign it and took alot of shit for that in the media but they didnt know the circumstances why it wasnt signed. that state did end up getting their money but not before all that political bullshit.

hopefully there is either NO time for this or a few senators have the sense to block this or vote against it

how many senators votes are needed to pass the bill out of 100 senators?

It's not about time. There is plenty of time to pass this as an attachment or as a stand alone. It's about horse trading.

Why are you all so worried ? This bill would just prevent us from using credit cards to fund internet gambling. Who uses credit cards anyway ? Neteller is teh way to go.

Jay C, actually, in this case it is about time. Frist knows that a stand alone Internet Gambling bill will not have time to get passed in this session. But if he attaches it to the Defense bill, time will no longer be a factor.

If there are no holds and they wanted to, they could jam this thing through in less than a few hours.

This is an underhanded bullshit stunt to try to quietly attach this to a bill with a lot of support that many will not review before they cast their YES vote. It happens all the time. Total bullshit gets passed because no one is paying any attention.

Wonderful

And no way in hell is the GOP about to vote against any defense spending bill. This is their meal ticket, especially with the elections coming up.

So is he attaching just the no credit card use bill or is he attaching the bill that makes it illegal to gamble.

I could care less if he blocks credit cards. Banks already do.

Now if he attaches the other bill making it illegal to gamble, that is a big problem.

In either case, if this Frist ass becomes president, I am finding another place to call home.

Yes, but since holds can be done anonymously, they would likely occur.

I don't think no one will notice in this case. The question is will anyone do anything to stop it.

Sometimes, minor bills no one cares about get attached.

In this case, every senator has gotten a ton of calls - you would think at least a few will care to separate the issue from the military.

Jay C, how could it refer to neteller? They could block credit cards I suppose (Not sure if neteller is marked as gambling) but anyways, if neteller is willing to move around accounts, they could never block efts and especially bank wires or bank checks. You really only have to send a check to neteller very occasionally.

The bigger question is will it make gambling criminal or does it just deal with funding?
