It says no new injury...still means he has (and was throwing) with a tear in his ligament. If he doesn't have Tommy John surgery now, he'll need it sometime in the future.

Yep, the longer they delay, the longer he is out indefinitely...Have the surgery and be back 100% April 2008.<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

Ligaments heal with scar tissue. When your start tearing that scar tissue it's a big OUCH!!! I think he'll need the surgery in hopes of still being able to throw that nasty stuff he has but he'll probably never be the same. What could have been???

Matt Thornton, White sox pitcher, had the surgery and said he came back with 5 MPH more on his fast ball..

the article linked in the first post of this thread...(it's so annoying to have to go back and forth to the linked article and this thread when making a post related to the article)...

Same old story for Liriano

MRI shows mild tear of ulnar collateral ligament in lefthander's elbow

CLEVELAND - Those who feared the worst with Twins pitcher Francisco Liriano's arm injury could breathe a little easier Thursday.
Early indications from two sources were that Liriano's magnetic resonance imaging exam, taken Wednesday, showed no new structural damage to his left elbow.
Twins General Manager Terry Ryan could not be reached for comment, but sources said Liriano's MRI results were very similar to the results from early August, which showed a mild tear of his ulnar collateral ligament.
At the time, the Twins said that was an old injury for Liriano. After resting the elbow and strengthening his shoulder, Liriano began a throwing program that led to Wednesday's return, which he cut short in the third inning against Oakland.
After being examined by the Twins' medical staff Wednesday, Liriano, 22, could be headed for a second opinion.
Speculation mounted Wednesday that Liriano could need the ligament reconstructive procedure commonly known as "Tommy John surgery."
The recommended rehabilitation time from Tommy John surgery is 12-18 months.
The Twins had already planned to shut down Liriano for the rest of the season, but if the early reports hold true, he would hold a much better chance of being at full strength for the start of spring training. More information is expected in coming hours, as the Twins begin a four-game series with the Cleveland Indians tonight.

...what strikes me about this article is this...
"sources said Liriano's MRI results were very similar to the results from early August, which showed a mild tear of his ulnar collateral ligament.
At the time, the Twins said that was an old injury for Liriano."

...now I thought I heard that his MRI in August showed no damage? A mild tear in the ulnar collateral ligament is a Tommy John surgery just waiting to happen. Like the old Fram oil filter commercial, you can pay me now, or you can pay me later!

That article is wrong. There is no structural ligament damage or tear, its a strain.

sportscenter said his injury could nonetheless be "career-changing" i believe, if i heard correctly. this according to whatever expert they interviewed.

Logic would dictate that his elbow can not take the strain of him being a major league pitcher. He probably will eventually tear the ligaments.

Because it was reported as no new damage, and it wasn't originally reported as a tear, it was originally reported as a strain.

Yea, it's a strain. I don't know where people got the story about structural damage. No new damage, to his already reported eblow, not his already reported partially torn elbow.

From the article Publics Money linked in the previous post...

Liriano's injury a mystery, but Twins play it safe

No elbow ligament damage has been found, but the pitcher's season is over. Arthroscopic surgery is a possibility.

CLEVELAND -- The Twins' worst fears about Francisco Liriano's elbow injury were alleviated Thursday, but General Manager Terry Ryan said the lefthander won't pitch again this season with the team still trying to discover exactly what is wrong.
Ryan said the results of Liriano's latest magnetic resonance imaging exam, taken Wednesday, showed no structural damage. Liriano's ulnar collateral ligament is still intact, Ryan said, so the rookie All-Star won't need the reconstructive "Tommy John" surgery, which could have kept him from pitching again until 2008.

...May I point out that both articles were written by the same writer, Joe Christensen, the first one at 12:46 and this latest one at 8:55. In the first article, he said unnamed sources reported that the MRI showed a tear and in this latest article he said that Twins General Manager Terry Ryan said the MRI did not show any structural damage. Now unnamed sources and MLB general managers don't read MRI's....radiologists do, and granted if you have two radiologists, you might very possibly get two very different readings. And then there are the orthopedic surgeons, who actually do the surgery, and they may have a totally different reading of the MRI. All of these doctors, like their professional brethren, the lawyers, give the most vague and nebulous reading possible so as to protect themselves from any liability.

So, in spite of the 2 above articles, I don't think we have any idea what the MRI said yet or more importantly, what it means for Liriano and his future.
