I haven't tried to drive from the US to Onatario, Canada since 9/11.

This question is especially for those who are familiar with the Detroit area.

Can a US citizen drive from downtown Detroit and get to Windsor, Ontario (the tunnel) without a passport?

Or will they stop you for a passport check if you're trying to get to Windsor?

If not by the tunnel, is there an alternate route from Detroit to Windsor where you don't need a passport?

thx

You don't need a passport. Your driver's license and birth certificate is more than enough. And driving across the border, your DL is probably sufficient. (There is some discretion taken by the guard on duty. Get a pissy one, and you might have your car taken apart.)

And the rules at one crossing apply to all of them. It's a national border.

Don't forget to leave your handgun at home or you will have to surrender it at the border, just like the Detroit cabbies.

I would also suggest that you take your US birth certificate as well as DL since you will likely want to re-enter the US?

And for god's sake, if they ask you the purpose of your visit to Canada, do not say 'to see if their weed's as good as they say!'

We aren't THAT lax about it.

The Canadian border guards think all Americans between 15 to 35 are sex crazed drug addicts trying to bring more AIDS to Canada - they'll strip search you and your car looking for the evidence - so be careful!

Clean the inside of your car. Get rid of any wrappers or empty pop cans that may be laying around. The Canadien border patrol despises a potential litterer.

Went to the Casino Windsor to look at the sports book they just opened. It sucks as its a parlay book only with junk odds.

Took drivers license, birth certificate just in case. All they did was check the license and thats it.

Shouldn't be a problem.

12thRound,
Bring your Birth Certificate if you have it. It could save you some considerable ass pain. If you are bringing family, make sure you also have documentation for eveyone in the car, especially the kids. This could hold you up. Again, a birth certificate definately will help.
