You'd have to go to the bank it was drawn on, which likely is far away.

Of course you can. If you don't have an account at the bank, you will pay a fee to cash the check. Or at a check cashing business, you will pay a fee also, maybe 1 -2%.

if its a check sent by a book, most likely its drawn on a major bank (that's the way international cashier checks are processed) and you would have to go to this bank to cash it, the cashiers checks that I get from my bank in CR are for example issued from a Bank of America account

example

I go to a bank in CR and ask for a cashiers check, they say np and they give me a check from the CR banks account they have in a bank in the States (not sure if that made sense, but banks in CR have accounts/agreements with banks in Europe/USA etc)

I believe most immigrants cash their friday pay-checks at casinos...don't know if there's a fee...and believe they receive somekind of free/matching play incentive for cashing there...it's their only cashing though as most leave the casino broke and have to work the following week for peanuts while the self-perpetuating viscous cycle of alien life continues.

If you do not have an account with the bank and the check is not drawn on their bank they will not cash it for you. Say the check is drawn on wachovia and you carry it to BOA they will not cash it. That is a fact I worked in the banking industy for 5 years. The only exception is some companys may have a check cashing agreement with the bank and they may cash payroll checks for certain customers, but thats it.

There is no way you can take a check from who knows what bank and cash it at another bank...maybe at a a check cashing store , I doubt that too though....check cashing stores are for payroll type checks, good luck....Just open an account and deposit it...you might have to wait a week or so depending on the amt.

find someone who is member of any bank and both of you endorse the check, if it is made out to you, and the owner of account can get it cashed immediately.

Most sportsbooks use banks outside of the country that have agreements set up with banks stateside. For example our company uses Banco Nacional De Costa Rica and our cashiers checks are drawn up on the Banco Nacional De Costa Rica, but also have Bank Of America logos on them.

If your check does not have a stateside bank logo on it you should call the book that issued your withdraw and ask them where you can cash it in the US because you do not have an account or whatever reason. Do not try and go through customer service as the small people on the totem pole will not know the answer to this. Ask to speak to a manager or if the book is big enough someone in accounting.
