Frank Robinson has spent most of his adult life wearing a baseball uniform (51 yrs in the game) at age 71, it appears the legendary hall of famer will be putting on the uniform for the last time this weekend.

He was the first black MLB manager in 1975 while still playing part time with the Indians (homering on opening day 1975 as player-manager), his 586 home runs are still 5th, a triple crown, a world series MVP, a 5 time world series participant, and 2 time world series champion, Robinson became the 53rd maanger to break the 1000 win mark earlier this season......

He was the only player to hit a ball clear out of Baltimore's Memorial Stadium (off Luis Tiant)

His career as a MLB manager has not been anything like his on the field accomplishments, his teams have never reached the playoffs , he did win manager of the year in 1989 with the Orioles but for the most part he had lousy teams.....When MLB purchased the Expos it was good old Frank they called to come down from his executive position with MLB to run the cash poor team....

The Expos went 83-79 in each of Robinson's first two seasons, finishing second and fourth, before sinking to 67-95 in 2004.

I would love to see him manage the SF Giants. Won't happen...but I would be in heaven. I love Frank Robinson.

I was lucky enough to have talked to Frank at the world series as a kid, I will never forget it...he looked mad as hell but was very nice to me, I still have that ball he signed...one of the true greats in baseball history.

Imagine being the first black manager, getting knocked down in your first at bat and then homering on opening day 1975 in your first at bat. :103631605

For some reason the Reds traded Frank to Baltimore in the winter of 1965 for Milt Pappas at age 29....he had averaged 30 homers 100 RBI for Cincy...

His first year in Baltimore (66) he won the triple crown and led Baltimore to its first WS Championship and started the Orioles dynasty that saw the O's go to 4 World Series from 1966-71 ....The Orioles traded him away after the 1971 season and did not go back to the World Series until he came back as a coach in 1979.

Frank should get sainthood for taking over that Expo/Nats franchise with ZERO support. Basically without any ownership, Robinson just had to use the players that he was given without any input who comes in or out. Hopefully the Nats can find somewhere for him to be in the organization.

yeah like he couldn't have won 10 divisions as Yankees manager..it is hilarious to think a guy like Joe Torre is far superior to a guy like Frank...anyone could have managed NY to several WS .

I think the thing that burns me about the whole situation is that he could have easily dealt with the team next year and see how it was with a real owner and make a run at it. Now the 2008 season he would probably gone anyway with the new stadium. On the DC sports station Gary Carter was companing for the job.

O/T Hey Journey, have you heard Anita Marks on the radio? I was watching her on the simulcast on MASN and shes not bad - more ways than one. :103631605

I don't really listen to sports talk radio anymore, I use to be a big radio junky...I use to listen to 1570 all the time, and of course WBAL before that...1300 some.

Frank is the fucking man...I'm real sad to see him go. One of the few guys still out there who doesn't give a fuck what anybody thinks about his managing style or anything else he says/does. As old-sschool as they come, no-nonsense guy.

there's a reason Soriano in left hasn't been an issue since the first week of the season.

Frankie Frank is a HUGE reason for it.

I used to think Frank Robinson really sucked as a manager because, like all great ballplayers, he expected his players to do too much. He used to be really mad too much also. I think this year and last with the nationals he has really mellowed out and gotten a whole lot better and funner to play for. Plus, he seems to be more understanding of the players and their various skill levels. Too bad they did not get Frank more talent to work with. I think he deserves one more year, or at least half a year with some additional good players before he gets fired. Just my two cents.

P.S. I once sat with Frank's daughter waiting for his flight to arrive.....she is/was smoking hot. She was dating Mike Young at the time, remember him?

Mighty Mike Young, he looked a lot like Eddie Murray at the plate, a switch hitter with enormous raw potential who started to blossom, but it was short lived.

As a Nats fan it will be sad to see Frank go. A lot of people question his managing style and moves, but he took a team that was supposed to be contracted and kept them competitive for a few years when they were just plain dogs.
He's always a good sound bite and tells it like it is. I don't know who they'll get to replace him but it will be tough to live up to the legend / personality that Frank is.
