O.K here is what happened tonight hopefully you can help me understand what might be wrong with my car..

Notes on car: 99 Mitsubishi Eclipse Automatic Transmission 90k miles I have owned automobile for about 3 years..

First thing-

While driving my oil light came on for a brief moment and then went away. Soon after I notice the car running pretty slow and appearing like it is stuck on 2nd gear or something, I also notice my speedometer is not working at all stuck on zero. At this time I was about 15 mins away and all I wanted to do was get my car home so I can avoid any need for towing assistance but I had my friend Akash in the car who lives about another 5 mins away. So I decide screw it I'll drop him off and then hopefully make it home.. After about 4 mins of driving feeling like I am stuck on 2nd gear the CHECK ENGINE SOON light comes on.. I then proceed to drive and eventually drop off my buddy and make it home luckily..

Long story short-

Oil light came on for quick second, then car felt like it was stuck on second gear driving extremely sluggish,4 mins later CHECK ENGINE LIGHT COMES ON drove car for about 15 mins with light on.. HELP

Any advice or help is extremely appreciated.. What do you think is wrong with the car? I parked the car right in front of where I live and decided to take care of this tomorrow when daylight arrives.. Hopefully someone can help thanks!!!!

Sounds like transmission problem to me. Check your fluid level is the 1st thing I would do. I am not very knowledgable about cars but have had many transmission problems. :icon_conf

Engine light + oil light probably means that your oil pump is bad. If your oil pressure drops it may trigger the "check engine" light automatically. If it's just the oil pump it's an easy fix, but starving the engine of oil, even for a few miles, can be serious. If you get away without having to get the engine rebuilt you're lucky. Even if everything looks fine I'd get the compression tested to make sure you didn't score the cylinders. Good luck.

Buy a AAA membership so you never have to limp your car home in a situation like that again.

Oil pump is a possibility, but I think that's it. This sounds like transmission all the way.

You may have bad gaskets too. If there is a crack/leak, you can lose pressure.

That should run no more than $150 or so if you take it some where. do it yourself about $40-50

I would check you oil to see if it's low. You can read a dipstick can't you? I would also check the transmission fluid level. yOU DO THAT AFTER THE ENGINE IS WARMED UP AND RUNNING.

Good advice. You may have just run it out of tranny fluid. Have you seen any red puddles under your car?

(I'm afraid that I still think your tranny is in bad shape)

Thanks for youre help, I checked the oil and the dipstick was completely dry, so I added 2 QTRs. I also checked the Transmission fluid and that was low too but not that low.. I started the car after about 30 mins and the engine light still went on.. So I guess I am going to have to take it a mechanic.. With what I told you guys what do you think it was?? Thanks in advance..

I think you may need a transmission flush!

I have had the car for 3 years and never have had a trans flush. I have driven the car 40k miles.. How often are you suppose to get those? Thanks..

Well, if you really did run it out of oil, it's probably dead (literally)

If so, that's a 3-7k engine rebuild :pucking:
