I'm not going to say that there won't be some pandemic one day that wipes out 2/3 of the human population. Actually, I believe one day that probably will happen. I'm not afraid as it could be five hundred years from now. It has happened before and despite new technologies could very well happen again. We should appreciate how well we've had it. Let's also hope that we're smart enough to stop the spread of something that awful, whatever it is.
The FLU in 1917 or 1918 killed more US servicemen in their prime of life than actual fighting in WWI. It was God awful.
HOWEVER all that being said....
The media LOVES scaring us shitless every day. They love it. People watch because they are worried and the media tells us how we are going to be wiped out due to this or that terror or dirty bombs or bird flu etc..... You know what? They will be right once every twenty times and I'm not saying nothing bad will happen...
BUT, the media and our own sick sensibilities have formed a culture of FEAR. People are fearful. In many respects we live in the very best of times (not in all respects) and yet we believe our children will be shot at school or someone is going to go on a meth crazed shooting spree in our neighborhood....
The fear costs us much more than the actual events ever do. I can't raise my children to be fearful at school. I have seen many parents doing their parenting and I have to admit, the fear they instill within the children alarms me. I'm not saying raise children that are oblivious to some of the basic realities of life....but I've said 'hi' to kids and adults walking in Wal-Mart (that don't know me) and they look at me like I'm a crazy person...they literally look at me with fear in their eyes....not the children...the parents!!
Then I want to grab the woman or man by the shoulders and say (by the way...that would really freak them out) you have more to fear for your children from SOMEBODY THEY KNOW!! MOST MURDERS ARE BY FAMILY OR FRIENDS/AQUAINTANCES!! MOST CHILD MOLESTATION IS BY FAMILY OR AQUAINTANCES!! QUIT BEING AFRAID OF PEOPLE. We are all in this together.
I'm not saying let your children play in the road unattended, but CRIPES!!
So, in short, the bird flu caught the last train for the coast with SARS, West Nile Virus, Dirty Bombs and the Green Bay Packers.
