My buddy and I are considering UNLV for graduate work in the future. I would love to hear any opinions on what it is like living there. From what I have seen you can get some very nive places for relatively inexpensive rent. Obviously if anyone has studied there, any input on the school would be appreciated.

I could give you a ton, as I live in the university area. Depends on what you are studying and why. Vegas is like anyplace else.

School is shit man. There are maybe 10-20% of the students really serious about getting somewhere in life, maybe 50% who fear they will lose their jobs or can't get a better job without getting the letters to add after their name, and the rest are just people who never really want to leave school. Not to say such schools don't exist elsewhere, but its appalling how little support UNLV gets from the local business community. Unless a key employee is a UNLV alum employers here pretty much look at it like a diploma mill.

On the other point, don't live near the school. Its got a few nooks of nice places, but you are in a polluted sea so to speak. The areas on Maryland just north and south of the school are among the worst in the Valley. The area just west of the Boulevard Mall is well known for being drug infested. The area south of Tropicana is just plain scary to look at day or night. If you stay within a few blocks to the East you might be alright, but why bother when less than 10 miles away you can find legitimately nice places to live?

Excellent write up, but the area south of Trop is not that bad. If you are on the other side of the airport that is. LOL.

Thanks. We would be doing an MBA there. I always thought UNLV had a decent reputation although the full time mba program is rather new and not really on the map when it comes to rankings etc. The main draw for us is the city, although we certainly don't want to get a worthless degree at the same time. Wildbill, do you know if other parts of the country also view UNLV as you desribed above?

I meant that little area until you hit Russell, yes south of the Airport is generally fine.

Simple rule for all those who don't live here. Almost invariably the further you are away from the core of the Strip and Downtown, the better the neighborhood. The very nicest parts of town are furthest from the action. Summerlin, Green Valley Ranch/Seven Hills, nicest parts of North Las Vegas, Lake Las Vegas, etc. all are well outside the core. Only area not so nice outside the core is due east of the Strip and even that area isn't all that bad. If you plan to move here, don't expect to live close to the action unless you like cheap apartments and questionable neighbors. Only reason why people live in these areas are so they can walk or take a bus to work. Buses don't really run into the nice parts of town, but are very convenient to the core.

My info is extremely accurate on the MBA program because I had a direct report at my last job in the MBA program. Its all given during evening hours and the distribution of people I mentioned is directly from him. He moved here from the Midwest and has been extremely disappointed in his peers. Also consider that most people in the program are there because an employer is paying for it. This means recruiting in the program is absolute shit, 75% of the students don't need any placement help.

I would say its better to have the UNLV MBA than not, but can't vouch much for it beyond that. If you truly want to stay in Vegas you probably can get something out of it, but if you leave don't be surprised if the world views it like a Univ of Phoenix MBA. Like any MBA program though, you can get out of it what you would like and surely can learn alot, but surely there are better choices out there for you.
