You never hear Joe saying anyone is better than his Big Red Machine team...

This is the best lineup ever IMO, no question.

Yankees won just TWO Word Series in over 30 years from the mid 60's to mid 90's remember...Sal will come in running his mouth about the great Yankees...yeah it is a great team but cmon, this is a joke one team can buy up all the other teams players.

Giambi should be in Oakland as their franchise player
A Rod should still be in Seattle as their franchise player
Abreu should be in Philly as one of their cornerstones
Sheffield should be elsewhere.
Johnny Damon should be in KC or Oak
Matsui comes over from Japan and goes right to the Big Apple.
Wang same thing.

Lets face it, NY is MLB and the rest of the teams are just playing to see who gets their shot at slaying the beast.

Very true and well said. Actually Theo Epstein said recently that theRed Sox cannot compete with the Yanks on their level. Hey have too much money and the payroll shows it.

The big difference this year the Yankees came together very nicely around July and now getting Shef back, Matsui taking his time coming back, they get Bobby from philly, Jeter having his bets season, ARod a typical year, Giambi back strong, Cano one of the best young players , Damon got red hot at mid season , Wang seemingly came out of nowhere and is now the teams ace, they have just enough pitching....No one is touching them this time around.

People are starting to realizing that Bobby Abreu is not just a good player...but a great player...and his patience in the 3 spot is the biggest difference between this yrs team and last yrs...

Actual quote from Joe Morgan: "I always thought Grady Little did a great job, even with Boston, with the exception of the Pedro incident." That's like saying, "I always thought Britney Spears had pretty good taste in men, with the exception of K-Fed."

That from Bill Simmons in his reading diary which is a must read. Good to see he is on his A game before his contract runs out.

One other point...

The one thing that no one ever mentions is that in addition to being able to buy up the high-priced free agents, the Yankees can afford to keep paying their homegrown talent like Jeter. If Jeter had started as a 19 year old with almost any of the other major league teams, he would be playing for the Yankees now anyway because they would have gotten him as a free agent.

The Skanks have shit for a farm system, but who needs a farm system when they are just used for trade bait? Its a sad state of affairs for MLB, but then again most of the world's soccer leagues operate under the same conditions. Chelsea wasn't going anywhere in the Premier League until they get a new owner who spends gobs of money on them and loses a ton each year, but hey they win championships now. Same couple of teams also win almost every domestic championship across Europe and the world as well. At least here paying more money doesn't guarantee that.

my buddies constantly debate whether its better to have salary caps in sports or baseballs no limit game.
I prefer that a big payroll buy the best possible talent & make a dynasty of it. I know that it makes for a more boring season, the same teams always make the playoffs, & small markets have no hope. But nobody forces fans to back losing teams, fans can get a dish & follow any team in the league. The franchises should be allowed to do all they can to make the best possible team. I think the new Murder's row is fascinating, & we would never see such a spectacle in the NFL.
the cap works well in football because there are a limited number of games & the NFL is not overextended with franchises, so there is talent to go around. Baseball has too many franchises, so some of the teams are high school. The royals, pirates, devil rays, rockies should all be terminated. The cap has not made the NBA more competitive. But the NBA has its own unique problems not related to caps.
It's arguable whether a cap in baseball will make any difference anyway. Of the ten teams with the highest payrolls in baseball, only 3 of them are in the playoffs. the 5 other teams that made the playoffs are in the middle of the list. Oakland has a great team & might win the world series. They have the smallest payroll in the playoffs.
I say let the free market be free, go Yanks. Life is unfair & the wealthy get the spoils in life. The answer is to become wealthy.

You are right about this. I remember many occasions when Morgan always put down the Yankees because of his Cincinatti "Big Red Machine" years. I thought it got so bad sometimes that he shouldn't do broadcasts involving the Yankees. So yeah, for him to finally admit something like this is huge.

I believe he said best AL lineup ever; I know he mentioned that if you take out Giambi in favor of a pitcher it doesn't look as powerful.
