CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Johnny Damon's left arm doesn't stop the running game, it emboldens it.
So when Damon throws out a runner, it's not just an assist, it's a happening. Well, a happening took place Wednesday and Damon missed it. He threw a strike from along the left field grandstand to get Albert Pujols trying to stretch a single into a double for the last out of the third inning, but instead of watching the play he was critiquing it with a fan.
"I didn't attack the ball as hard as I did the one last month," said Damon.
Damon was referring to the Little League homer Cincinnati's Brandon Phillips hit on June 18 at Progressive Field. Phillips skipped a ball off the left field grandstand that bounced past Damon as he crashed into the wall. The ball rolled all the way to the warning track as Phillips scored.
"I went back and checked that play on video," said Damon. "There was a sprinkler head that diverted the ball into the wall.
"So today I said I'm not going to get caught doing that. I got there and was a little slow grabbing the ball. When I threw the ball, a fan said, "Great throw." I said, "No, it was a bad throw. I left it up.""
As the conversation between Damon and the fan continued, second baseman Jason Kipnis caught Damon's throw and slapped the tag on the sliding Pujols.
"The fan goes, "He's out,"" said Damon. "I go, "You're absolutely right." I had absolutely no clue after I threw the ball because I started talking to the fan. That's something I'll definitely remember.""
After the third out, Damon sprinted toward the dugout slapping hands with fans along the grandstand.
It was Damon's first assist since he recorded two in 2010 for the Tigers. Someone cue the music from the Twilight Zone because they were both against the Angels.
