I couldn't believe Sheffiled was not playing last night..I don't care what bernie did in years past....I wouldn't be surprised if George ordered A Rod down in the order....Torre could be fired if NY loses today.

And who would you take out? Sheff, Matsui or Cabrera?

Cabrera historically does well against Bonderman.

Then again if the Yanks lose his off-season is going to be verrryyy uncomfortable for Torre.

Abreu 3-5 1 HR career vs Bonderman
Shef 3-17
Matsui 7-15 3 HR

OK then Shef should be the odd man out not Abreu. I knew Jman would come back with the heat.

I thought Sheffield should have played last night and not today if they wanted to rest him or get someone else in...this is no time to be giving players at bats for years of service.

All I can imagine is Abreu is not 100%, how they can sit him after the two months he had, I don't know.

ironman, how can u say historically cabrera does well agains bonderman, he hasnt been around long enough to make that determination... also as for torre ive said it now for weeks, if he wins the world series i believe he retires and if he doesnt win it i believe he gets fired... no matter what i honestly believe joe girardi will manage the yanks next year.... jmo, u guys will have a field day with this one im sure....

the lineup should be

CF Damon
SS Jeter
RF Abreu
1BGiambi
3B Arod
LF Matsui
C POsada
2BCano
LF Cabrera

Screw Sheffield, they should be playing the guys that got them to this game and not the high priced sheffield who is a cancer.

Honestly, as a manager its great to be able to have this difficult decision. Using the word historically is a terrible choice since he has had only 6 AB's against him so in that I apologize. I believe he is 3-6 against Bonderman and as Jman mentioned Abreu is 3-5. So basically you're flipping a coin there.

Yanks slam Bonderman and all will be well in the Evil Empire (until game 5).

again jman way too early to make that determination....

I think that can be said with almost every batter/pitcher matchup in baseball.

They should keep that idiot.....they deserve each other....him and the Yanks. I'm saying it's official. After the biggest choke in history....The NEW YORK YANKEES inherited 'THE CURSE OF THE BAMBINO'!

very much agree clip, however, abreu has been solid since arriving in ny. not to say that cabrera didnt have a great year for the yanks because he did... ultimately though, u have to take abreu if healthy because of his high obp and hes been around (although not in the playoffs) alot longer than melky... no matter what i hope whoever is in there can get the job done tonight because the winner of this game is the winner of the series in my opinion...

I agree 6 at bats is nothing...just posting what the numbers stated...some managers have been very successful by using batter/pitcher match ups, some HOF managers.

Last night I watched the game with a Yanks fan and as soon as A-rod stepped to the plate they showed his playoff numbers and he said "MAN! LOOK AT THIS BUM!"

LOL, I thought I was in the Bronx for a few seconds. I kept laughing after that.

I just read that Giambi has been benched

DETROIT -- With the team on the brink of elimination, Joe Torre shook up the Yankees lineup for Saturday's Game 4 of the American League Division Series at Comerica Park.

The two biggest changes saw Alex Rodriguez dropped from the the cleanup spot to the eight-hole and Melky Cabrera inserted into the lineup in left field, batting ninth.

Gary Sheffield, who started Game 3, is hitting cleanup and playing first base, while Hideki Matsui is the designated hitter. Jason Giambi, who was the designated hitter in Games 1 and 2 and played first base in Game 3, is not in the lineup as Torre cited his poor numbers against Tigers starter Jeremy Bonderman (3-for-15 lifetime).

"[It's adding] just a little juice," Torre said regarding Cabrera's addition to the lineup. "[He's] somebody who may give a little shot of energy."

Rodriguez is 1-for-11 in this series and is now 4-for-38 with no RBIs since Game 5 of the ALCS against the Red Sox in 2004, totaling 11 postseason games.

Torre spoke with Giambi to inform him that he would not be in the starting lineup, but he did not speak with Rodriguez about the decision to drop him to No. 8. Rodriguez has not hit this low in the order since he was with Seattle in 1996, his first full season in the Majors.

"He's one member of this team, and we're all trying to get something accomplished," Torre said. "He hit one ball hard to center field [in Game 3]. But it looks like he's feeling for it."

Torre also said that Mike Mussina, who started Game 2, will be available out of the bullpen as Saturday is his scheduled throwing day
