My earliest memories of MNF are of Howard Cosell.... When I think of Monday Night Football the memories go back to the 70' as a kid, trying to stay up to watch those halftime highlights.

MNF1.gif

Then around 1987 betting on football became my main focus and as for many of us MNF was the last game of the week...With Tuesday being 'payday' if the weekend was a bad one, and Monday Night Football was the last shot at avoiding paying the man.

There was the time when I made a huge bet for me (at the time)...

A friend of mine was putting in my plays and was suppose to put the bet in, and as far as I knew the bet was made...This was around 1991, Buffalo hosted Washington and the Bills were favored ,I watched the whole game thinking I had all this money on it, of course the Bills covered and my bet won...

As I was leaving my friends house where I watched the game -I happened to see the guy who was supposed to have put the bet in, he lived right around the corner. I stopped my car and asked him if he saw the game, he wasn't too happy and quickly told me he was unable to get my bet in...That is one of the worst feelings you can have as a gambler...here I watched the entire game thinking I won and then just like that it was taken away. :icon_conf

Does anyone else have a monday night football story involving a bet (good or bad)?

Early 80s I think. Jets were like 11-1, playing Miami who were probably under .500 . Game was in Miami. I was in Cancun and having trouble getting a phone line. Finally got through and hit Mia +1 hard. Mia won soemthing like 44-7. We had one hell of a time that night.

Giants @ Raiders. Had the Giants -4 and they were up 10. Raiders had it first and goal from the Giant 1 yard line. About 2 minutes left in the game. Thought for sure my ass was cooked. 3 straight running plays..nothing. 4th and goal from the 1. I'm like."kick the f'ing FG you bastards!" They got for it..qb sneak, clearly the length of the ball gets in. The refs say he didn't make it. Oakland challenges, they're showing the replay over and over. Hellen Keller could have seen it was a TD. Announcers are like, "there's no way this isn't overturned". I'm like.."damn it!" Refs comes out ..."The play on the field stands as called. Turnover on downs." LMFAO...I couldn't believe it! Happiest man around that night!

My MNF memories are of Cosell, too. I am a Steelers fan, and the halftime highlights were the only way I could see their highlights. As soon as the highlights were over my parents made me to go to bed. Good times.

ahh yes I was the exact same way....And that was the only way to see what they did...I lived and died for how many yards Franco Harris ran for.

If I saw 15 carries 44 yards I was not a happy camper...and those 20 carry 155 yard games were what I was hoping for...Couldn't wait to get the monday paper (The Evening Sun' just to see that...If he had a big game they would be on the halftime highlights.

Cosell : ""Franco had a big game, look at him pounding away at the Browns line, he was unstoppable, Pittsburgh 44, the Browns 10!"" LOL :toast:

One good moment for me...I had the Houston Oilers over , this is when Houston was really good and Warren Moon was with them ....the game had all these points at the half, but Houston had a very large lead, I needed just one second half TD, I had a lot on the game...

The entire second half was a real clunker, Houston wasn't trying very hard to score and their opponent could not score...finally with about 3-4 minutes left, the Oilers got down inside the 10 yard line, this was my only chance and I knew it, they end up going to 3rd and goal and this was the last possible play, Moon takes the snap scrambles to the right drops the freaking ball picks it back up and makes a dash for the pylon....he gets in (TD) and my heart slowly sinks back into my chest from my throat! Wiinner...should have been an easy one but of course not.

Sometimes I wonder to myself if it sucks only to need a TD or say 10 more points in the 2nd half to hit an "over". Is it just me or do those ones seem to be sometimes more stressfull than the one where you need like 17-20 points in the 2nd half to win.

Forgot to add, sounds like Moon might have had a large play on the 'over' himself there.

I had it backwards , Buffalo led 35-0 at the half, and Houston was down to their last chance, Moon stumbles and bumbles and scores to send it over 35-7!

Whew...I found the box score Oct 11 1993!

15 or so years ago. Cleve/Cinci and Cleveland had 1st and goal from the 2. THey score and I win the over and win the side. they failed to get in and lost both. Painful.

Oct. 14, 1974 - The Lions were outgained by San Francisco, 309 to 229 yards, but took advantage of 49er miscues for a 17-13 victory. Detroit intercepted three Dennis Morrison passes and kept the 49ers out of the endzone until the final minute of the game. The Lions' touchdowns came on Bill Munson's 13-yard pass to Larry Walton and Steve Owens one-yard run. Wilbur Jackson led the 49ers with 91 yards rushing and hauled in two passes for 15 yards and one TD.

I had the Niners plus 6.5 for what at the time could only be described as my balls. Niner's running back Wilbur Jackson's TD with about 10 seconds left gave me the backdoor cover and saved what would have been a painful visit to a finance company..

FWIW - I don't take those kind of chances anymore.

That was the day and year I was born. Needless to say I had no money riding on that game. LOL. That would come about 12 years later.

Tenn Vs. Ravens about 4 years ago.

I booked $14,000 on Tenn between game and halftime bets. McNair gets Tenn to the one with 2 seconds left and they need a TD to beat the Ravens and me!!!! No time outs so they run up to snap the ball.

Quick QB sneak and they win!!!!!!!!!

Not so fast my friend.

The refs said it wasn't a legal play so they made them do it again and they don't get in. I was praying next to my couch the whole second half. :dancefool

1995 - San Diego against Kansas City. I was in a hole to a college book. Uttered the words dime for the first time ever before betting San Diego getting something like 3' and under. Only way I lose both in OT is a KC touchdown, total was shot. Tammarick Vanover delivered for KC. Bunk bed went tumbling over and 7 or 8 hockey sticks met their untimely demise that evening.

You must have been the one who brought me the incredibly lucky backdoor cover. I was sitting on the edge of my couch (literally praying) watching the game thinking there is no way SF will get this meaningless 11 yard TD on the last play of the game. Jackson broke a tackle and ran untouched from there into the Lion endzone.

My friend hit a $2000 reverse on that game to get out of a hole. Will never forget. KC was minus 5 and tied it up on a late td. Then the side and over came in on that Vanover TD.
