One of the threads in here has me wondering something I've thought about and forgot to ask a few months ago:

What can anyone tell me in answer to the question: Is it legal to wager on sports in Mexico? Online wagering in Mexico?

Thanks.

Absolutely legal, Tulsa.

Mexico, Tijuana specifically, has for a century offered Americans all kinds of things that were at one time or another prohibited in the good old USA.

In the 1910s California banned horse racing. So a San Fran boxing promotor built a track in Tijuana, just across the border. This was the noted Caliente Racetrack - Jack Dempsey was on hand as official starter on one of the beginning days. (Later, when the casino was built, scores of Hollywood celebs came down, as well as one Al Capone)

In the 1920s thirsty funlovers and gamblers made their way to TJ. The town thrived on US prohibitionl

In the early 1940s, by the way, the founding godfather of Las Vegas, Buggsy Siegel, tried to buy the Caliente operation. Which by this time was also booking American horse racing, openly and legally.

The track was very innovative in its day, initiating the Pick 6 form of wagering, and starting the photo finish and a lot of other firsts.

In 1989 the Mexican govt gave Caliente a concession to operate sports wagering. They relied heavily on the expertise offered by Vegas hotshot Mike Roxborough to train their personnel.

The books there do take phone wagers, altho supposedly only from inside Mexico. (LOL) They also have, I think, online betting, also from inside Mexico (Lol again) (You can, I think, post up at the Pueblo Amigo books, just over the border)

With the tax on winning bets, the late line postings, no bonus or reduced juice,it is not for a sharp player. Unless you want to take advantage of the hot dog lines and overs on some high profile games.

I meant the "unders" on the high profile games.

Definitely a place to visit if you are in the San Diego area, and are going to go into Mexico, as most SD visitors do. A place to drink tequila and
Corona (or better, Tecate) eat tacos and tortas, and scream for your team.

Not a place to bet serious money, not because you won't get paid (you will), but the federal tax and other negs makes it a no-no

Online wagering is legal through The Caliente sportsbooks. Their website is http://www.caliente.com.mx/

However, there is an interesting IMPORTANT NOTICE on a frontpage link to residents of USA and Canada regarding wagering through the website though. I assume this is new.

As for whether it is legal to wager online down here Mexico to sites not based in and licensed by Mexico, who the hell knows but I wouldn't worry about it.

Website looks to be only in Spanish, which I can't read. So they must not want any US players.

This entire thing has me depressed.
Dante-Anything new ?

The Caliente site does have an English language link - it's just a bit hard to find (deliberately so, I believe). Below are thier current college football lines. Go to Lineas-Apuestas (Lines-Wagers) on the frontpage, click there, and click around. It's a poor, confused site, but the info is there. The English languge site has a pic of the British Union Jack - what hypocrisy.

The frontpage warning may be new (as far as being posted there) but friends in TJ tell me that Caliente always had an official - if usually not enforced - policy of prohibiting Americans from betting from the US via phone or computer. Something to do with the fact that the operation has many businesses in the US, often hidden. For instance, they pay American racetracks a fee for the simulcasting of those races into Caliente.

I imagine the enforcement of the no phone or internet bets from the US policy will be enforced more rigourously now.

The place in any case is strictly for recreational players.

Why would you want to bet with them? They charge the same 1.5% tax online as they do in the land-based books. You'd be nuts to use them with all the good options. Even if you got a good number here and there the 1.5% tax will eat you up.

Its easy to block out of Mexico calls. Online might be a bit more difficult for them, but they probably would require proof of Mexican status to set up an account. This usually requires a Mexican bank account, something that isn't easy to get.

Bill, I think they operate their online bets the same way they do the phone betting - you go to one of their many books in Mexico, esp in Tijuana, and post up. And withdraw the same way.

When they put in the phone betting they knew full well that people were calling in from the U.S.,and did not block them. Now, they likely are - they don't want to irritate the US, what with NAFTA and all. It's the same reason that Mexico has not instituted legal casino gaming - they want to play nicey-nice with the US. When the family that owns the operation was accused by the DOJ in Washington of close business ties with the big narcotics cartels, they hired ex Senator and now big lobbyist Warren Rudman to pressure DOJ (under lez J Reno) to reverse that call.

That Caliente has a monopoly hammerlock on the book biz at the border (there is competition elsewhere in Mexico) puts the lie to the alleged new "openness" in the land of sombra y sol. No other booking outfit is allowed in.

Definitely only for recreational bettors. But a sportsbetting or horse betting visitor to the border area may nonethless enjoy a visit to one of their nicer books. Horseplayers, btw, have it even worse there - a 2 % tax on the entire payback, which would include thier own money!

The US reversed the call because the owner became the mayor of Tijuana and it became hard to criticize him publicly and try to work with him and his administration. His bodyguards killed a newspaper reporter and editor, but he said he didn't take responsibility for what his guards did because he didn't order them to do anything. Sure.

That alone is reason enough not to bet with them, but the tax is the kicker. I haven't bet with them in almost a decade, but still remember how bad a deal it was. They might have competition coming, the governor of Baja California said he wouldn't tolerate such a monopoly, but who knows if the other book operators will take their chances. In any case with the new "bingo" casinos they have now, especially the nice one on Revolucion, the sports business will become an afterthought for all the operators in Mexico.

Not only a bad deal betting, but even a horseplayer won't get a comp cup of coffee, let alone a beer at the Mexican books!

I'll believe that Caliente at the border will get competition when I see it. It's been rumored for years. And if they do, I'd suspect it will be a presta de nombre deal - Caliente's Hank family operating the "competition" through a beard. Common stuff in Mexico.

The tax on winning bets hurts then badly. Especially since the crooks at Gobernacion - the agency that allegedly oversees the gambling in Mexico - do absolutely nothing. It is a form of legal graft, or is "legal graft" an oxymoron in Mexico? The tax should be shitcanned - but it won't be. The PAN is in, the PRI is out, and nothing has changed. Which is why I was rooting for the PRD last election -- and still believe, with the lowliest Mexican peon, that AMLO was ripped off, maybe with help from Wash DC.

i used to love to go to the dog races, but that was years ago

Hope you never bet much more than your username. Aside from a 26% mutuel take on the exotic betting (almost everyone who bets the dogs there bets the exotics, not straight) I'd guess it to be as "straight" as Lombard Street in Frisco - as in NOT!

When an exacta ends up paying less than the straight win payoff - as I've seen happen often when I was dumb enough to ocassionally go to the dogs (literally) - then you know you're in a venue that you shouldn't be!

The owner of Caliente, supposedly an animal lover, used to shoot the dogs who graded out, and fed them to his pet lions and tigers. Couldn't inject them, as they do at many greyhound tracks, that would spoil the meat.

there is a caliente book right in the middle of the red light district in TJ. it's kinda hard to spot and u might have to ask for directions, but look for the sign. there are skanks standing on both sides of the door as u enter & exit. it's pretty friggin hilarious.
