He has to be the most improved player in the league. This guy looked horrible last season (as is to be expected for a rookie QB on a terrible team). But wow, this guy is really playing well this season.

11-for-15, 132 yards with 2 TDs and 0 Ints so far in the 1st half today against San Diego.

I wish I could find my posts on here when I defended the guy last season. Everyone wanted to label him a bust & it was his first season starting! I think people who make such comments show no knowledge of the game.

I wouldn't doubt if I were one of them. Not for his play, but just because as a Utah supporter I never thought he was a great player. I thought he was a product of a great system. I am amazed at how well he is playing.

He's an example of taking a pick on a need position because of braintyping. He has the braintype to play in the NFL, but I for one did wonder about his skill level.

Lets face it, he was a #1 pick by default. The 49ers did not plan accordingly and HAd to take a QB #1. He is using the Peyton manning approachand outthinking teams and preparing well except he doesn't have Peyton natural talent.

...

People are to quick to label QB's busts. Hll it used to be a QB wouldn't even see action in there first 2-3 years. These days if a guy plays like shit in those years people are already on there case. QB's need time to develop before deciding if they are a bust.

Can Alex Smith keep this up?
The Niners QB may have really changed, but don't give Jim Harbaugh all the credit

The San Francisco 49ers are 4-1. This is a surprise. Quarterback Alex Smith is playing well. This may be an even bigger surprise.

For the most part, the 49ers have gotten off to their hot start because of defense and special teams. Both units rank second in the league according to the Football Outsiders' DVOA (defense-adjusted value over average) ratings. But the 49ers are also showing a strong passing game, led by Smith, a previously undistinguished quarterback.

Smith is completing 65.9 percent of passes with seven touchdowns and one pick, plus a career-high 7.7 yards per attempt. According to Football Outsiders stats, Smith has been the 10th-best quarterback in the league on a per-play basis this season.

The question is obvious: Can Smith possibly play this well going forward? And how rare is this kind of improvement from a quarterback who struggled so much in his first six seasons?

How could you NOT give Harbaugh some if not a lot of the credit.

TD Bruce Miller, 30 Yd pass from Alex Smith (David Akers kick is good), 1:03. Drive: 1 play, 30 yards in 0:06.

13-0 Niners

Should get to 7-1
