Strong rumors Randy Moss maybe coming to the Pats in a trade, before 4 pm.

POSTED 10:59 a.m. EDT; UPDATED 11:04 a.m. EDT, October 17, 2006
MOSS TO PATS RUMORS GATHERING STEAM
Our network of NFL sources is buzzing with talk that the New England Patriots are trying to work a trade with the Raiders for receiver Randy Moss. "It's getting strong," a league source told us a little while ago.
The trading deadline is 4:00 p.m. EDT today.
A week ago our sleuthing could turn up no proof that such a move was possible. But the same gut feeling that had us convinced Neil Rackers would miss that late-game field goal last night for the Cardinals has us thinking that Moss could be making the trip to Massachusetts soon.
Then again, it was that same gut feeling that told us the Raiders would advance to the Super Bowl in Randy's first year with the team.
On Monday, Patriots receiver Doug Gabriel, who was traded from Oakland to New England several weeks back, talked openly about reuniting with Moss. "He can be a fit in this offense because he's a guy who loves to work," Gabriel said. "If Randy was here, he'd make every other receiver want to pick up their game. He made me step my game up. He came and gave us a big push -- not just a small push, a big push -- and made us step up our game."
The obvious argument against such a trade is that the turd-averse Patriots wouldn't want a guy like Moss around. But that same claim could be made about running back Corey Dillon, who was a turd extraordinaire in Cincinnati before being traded to the Pats.
The possible difference is that Randy's turdishness comes from a desire to win games, and a guy like Terrell Owens is more of a me-first, me-only problem child. If our thinking is accurate, then Moss and Dillon have a lot in common.
Besides, we think the Pats realize that the receiver position attracts and/or creates prima donnas. Hell, they drafted Chad Jackson, whom one team took back to the airport early after a horrendous visit in which his cell phone went off twice during a meeting with the head coach. At one point during the visit with said team, Jackson muttered, "I don't want to play here anyway."
The thinking (we think) is that Moss can be influenced by the leadership structure already in place, including quarterback Tom Brady, defensive lineman Richard Seymour, and coach Bill Belichick.
Other considerations are compensation to the Raiders. The Pats already have an extra first-round pick, courtesy of the Deion Branch trade. And if Moss still has his magic, the notion of essentially trading Moss for Branch is a major upgrade, in our view.
Finally, Moss would have to be willing to restructure his contract, which includes salaries of $9.75 million in 2007 and $11.25 million in 2008. The Pats likely would want to move a lot that money into a signing bonus (or a 2006 roster bonus), reducing the cap hits in coming years -- and possibly extending the contract into 2009 and beyond.
It's a gutsy move for all concerned, but it might be the best thing for everyone involved. The Pats can reload for another Super Bowl run. The Raiders can start to build for the future by getting value for a guy they might have had to cut in the offseason. And Moss can take the stick out of his butt and chase a championship again.

According to NBCSports.com's Tom Curran, the Patriots will not be making any moves for Randy Moss prior to the NFL trade deadline.

Profootballtalk.com reported Tuesday morning that the Moss-to-Patriots talk was heating up in league circles, but it appears to be just talk. Oct. 17 - 11:59 am et

Another championship if it happens.

Tom Curran is very close to the Pats too. He use to be the Pats writer for the Providence Journal.

Michael Felger ESPN and the Boston Herald will have the real dirt.

Hence why I beleive we don't need to make a trade for a reciever w/ an inflated contract. Three Super Bowl rings w/out having to pay for a big contract receiver.

One thing thats very apparent...the Pats' philosophy is to NEVER set the market at the receiver position. I don't see them taking on a top 3 paid receiver contract...just goes against everything they push. And I dont see Oakland eatting some of the contract...but weird things tend to happen.

As I watched the hapless raiders Sunday night, long before I heard these rumors, I kept thinking why dont the pats trade a 1st rounder for Moss. Oakland would be insane not to do it. NE owes it to Brady after he took money off the table. They would be immediate super bowl favorites.

Nope, just thought my Olde English style of writing was rubbing off on you.

Then I realised it was Brady who was rubbing off on you ...

haha

On topic: Moss as a Patriot? I don't see it. Though I do feel for the guy, and have to give him credit for shutting his trap on the field (TO, take the hint), with the way this team is playing. Has to suck being that good, when your team is that bad.

why?

Troy Brown, David Patten, & Freddy 'boom boom' Coleman (who was working at UPS I beleive) won the first Super Bowl as 14 pt dogs.

And this year they are far superior in Tight End position, and are a deeper receiver corps.

The defense needs to get better...and the offensive play calling as well...its not the receivers, imo.

WIDE RECEIVER IS THE MOST OVERRATED POSITION IN THE NFL

Pats took a chance on Corey dillion and he worked out fine.
Doug Gabriel who was Moss's ex teamate says he is really misunderstood and says he was a great teamate...Anyway Moss would be the best receiver Brady ever had besides Bridget Moynihan...who also reminds me why Im not on the "otherside."

did you watch the Broncos-Pats game? those tight ends aren't going to carry you to the promise land if that's what you're hoping. anyway, you guys might have to play them in the playoffs again, and would Lose AGAIN.

I use to think that too.But there is an article with stats at coldhardfootballfact.com that disputes that (it has stats and facts on it) outstanding site by the way that is getting national notice.
