Are Canadian banks open on Saturdays?

I am planning to make a pilgrimage up to probably Montreal. A few friends want to go but can only go on a weekend easily.

Also, has anyone found a Canadian bank that can be opened online?

Do all American banks keep the same hours that you would ask this question?

Baffling. I mean, with all due respect ...

Every bank is different, every branch is different. Same as there. You can find each branch's banking hours online, I'm sure. And if not, you can always call.

Same as US banks Sean, 4 or 5 hours on Saturday for some branches, but not an official banking day.

Just to clarify, most of the banks are not open on Saturday. The only chain I know of is TD.

I went to a BMO on a Saturday and exchanged some US Dollars this year, was the third or fourth bank I looked at before finding one open.

I can't say every bank in the US stays open on Saturday, but I can say 80 or 90% do and if you went to any major city at least one branch of each bank would be open...

I wasn't looking for a run down of every bank and their hours - just an idea if it is even a possibility before I start looking around and calling.

Have fun in Montreal Sean. How is your French? You can certainly use English but be prepared for some dirty looks and sighs. I love Montreal and will never stop going there, but my goodness Tim Horton cashier showing open disdain because I order a coffee in English in the middle of the business district was ridiculous.

Yes. 95% of banks in America are open on Saturday until 12 P.M.

Sean1,
Generally, banks are open Monday to Friday from 8 or 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Some banks (or branches) have extended hours during the week and are open part of the day on Saturdays.

If you are not a Canadian resident you will have to show up at the Branch. Opening an account online is for residents only.

That always cracks me up, they take a look at you thinking you are going to say it again in french and I just say it again in English cause I damn well know that they understand it. Montreal isn't that bad for that....Quebec City is awful they'll flat out start swearing at you in French for only speaking English.

Hard to believe. Most Tim Hortons clerks in the downtown area are native English speakers. That cashier was probably just not a fluent English speaker, hence uncomfortable - but he/she has to deal with a 50/50 English/French clientele, so there's no way he/she was giving you "dirty looks".

You don't need to speak a word of French to navigate around Montreal. The biggest bitch might be interpreting some road signs.

Legit question, almost SURE that all Canadian post offices are closed on Saturday..now thats similar to banks, both are on the same basic schedule here in the US.

As for the French thing, go to some of the cities NOt called montreal in Quebec, then you will see some strange looks if you speak English to them, it was uncanny the last time i was up there last summer.

Postal outlets located in Pharmaprix drugstores are open on weekends.

Quebec city and most other cities in the province are essentially 99% French - of course you'll stand out!

The post office is gov't owned. But the ones in convenience stores and whatnot are open.

Her native language was without a doubt French, could tell by how badly accented her English was. Trust me, it was a disdainful sigh, was clear as can be. I am used to it though, been in Montreal probably a dozen times and know the attitude. Was suprised to get it though because you're right, you don't expect it in a Tim Hortons.

Its funny how Francophone Montrealers play it both ways. They are happy for the endless stream of tourists, 95% of whom speak English, but then curse at anything English as if it is ruining their precious culture. People are coming to see that culture so obviously English isn't about to destroy it.

Yes it really has changed. I lived in Montreal in the late 60's but my French wasn't good enough so when I spoke French I was answered in English. Today I suspect my French would be tolerated.
