ONE AND DONE?

By ANDREW MARCHAND
NY POST

October 20, 2006 -- ESPN's Tony Kornheiser said he has "no plans at the moment'' to return to Monday Night Football next season.

"At the moment, in my mind, I always thought I signed up for one year,'' Kornheiser, in his rookie year on MNF, told NYP TV Sports.

So you don't think you will be back?

"This is the one year,'' Kornheiser said. "I have no plans at the moment, but I don't think anyone should be stunned or shocked or surprised or blow their brains out if I just say, 'That was fun. Thanks a lot. See ya.'''

When asked if he has had "serious thoughts'' about this possible decision, Kornheiser leaned on his self-effacing style that has made him a multi-media success.

"No, I haven't had serious thoughts, I have had random, old-guy musings,'' Kornheiser, 58, said.

Kornheiser said he hates the traveling, but he knew he would. What he didn't anticipate was the amount of preparation it takes each week.

"It is a job for me,'' said Kornheiser, who will work Monday's Giants-Cowboys game. "It is work for me.''

While Kornheiser, Mike Tirico and Joe Theismann haven't been scintillating, MNF has been a huge ratings success for ESPN. This week it beat NBC's Sunday Night Football - marking the first time a cable network had more households watching in prime time than did a broadcast network on the same NFL weekend.

Sounds to me like he realizes the early returns are not good for him and it is a way for him to save face and get out without having to be axed by ESPN.

Sounds like PTI and the radio show must be a cakewalk since MNF, "is work" for him. I hate PTI and don't like his radio show, yet I don't mind him in between those two tools on MNF.

I like him on MNF. If ESPN were smart they would hire Charles Barkley. He was very entertaining the other night.

Kornheiser is much more under the microscope on MNF, than in his other venues. I don't care for him, but believe he's a bit handcuffed on MNF, with Theisman talking all the time and not respecting Kornheiser's opinion.
I've always said, MNF is trying to recreate the Howard, Frank and Dandy-Don team. It just doesn't happen. You can't force chemistry.

there ya go.

I did like Dennis Miller, but Korny is only part of the problem. Theismann is just as irritating.:nohead:

Solution: turn down the audio. :drink:

TK gave up his radio show to do MNF. I think he enjoys PTI and writing newspaper columns for the Washington Post. I don't think he ever wanted the MNF gig but the money was too big to turn down. He's in his late fifties and hates to travel. He's away from his family. It won't surprise me if he gives up MNF. He's not hurting for money. He's written some books. PTI pays
$500K a year. I would think that's what he is making because Max Kellerman was trying to get $800,000 for Around The Horn and they told him to walk. PTI is one of ESPN's most sucessful shows. If he goes back on radio you have figure between everything he will make about $850,000 a year. I'll bet he got paid close to a million to do MNF. It's cheap because NBC is paying Madden and Michaels 7-8 million total to do Sunday, Madden took a pay cut. He was getting huge money when he was doing ABC MNF. You have to figure
ESPN's crew cost 1/2 as much as the NBC 2 man booth.
