if only the Mets had won. That has got to be the best catch ever, considering how big a game it was. As Cardinals fans, we really didn't think we were gonna be able to overcome that. Full speed and jumping off one foot in stride to snag it like he did....that was simply unbelieveable. Props to him, but we just won the pennant! :dancefool

Great catch, YES. Greatest ever? Negative. How old are you? Under 30 for sure.

1. Dwight Evans 1975 world Series Game six 11 inning off Joe Morgan....

But you got the right idea!

I guess I need to read more books! I do feel that this catch will be largely forgotten, and it's a shame, because it was remarkable and could have been legendary. I know I just felt that it wasn't meant to be for the Cardinals after he made that catch.

That was one helluva catch by Dewey.........and the game on the line even more so than last evenings catch considering it was the top of the 11th.............and there would be no FISK POLE at Fenway without that catch.

My thoughts......just like GREAT, GREAT players, GREAT, GREAT catches are hard to compare.

They do not need to be compared because of their greatness.

Well said. I remember Sparky Anderson saying "Given the time place and circumstance it was probably the greatest catch ever." It was unreal especially because of those factors. Also in he middle of a classic World Series helps.

Chavez was a heck of a grab too dude. No offense.

When the Mets didn't come back and take advantage of the Rolen error that was the game as it turned out..

Valentine , had some awful bad at bats and once again struck out (with bases loaded one out) with the game on the line...the other key for Mets was the 9th,,, Floyd up in a contact spot, wrong guy up.

Wille Randolph managed that inning like an American League manager , which i can live with, just a shame a big swinging, all or nothing type like Floyd was up in that spot...Either way it was a great game to just watch .

Devon White 1992 World Series still doesn't get enough respect.

devo was the greatest centerfielder ever. If he was any kind of a hitter he would have been recognized as such.

i believe chavez' catch was the best i have ever seen. i am 32 so i dont recall evans' catch. I have seen it and i think chavez catch was far more athletic and spectacular.

devo's catch has my vote for best ever. i remember it well, i laid the wood, and because of his catch i cashed my tik. should've been a triple play. to this day i think the ump blew the call on the 3rd out, i thought the baserunner should've been called out for being out of the baseline. if it would have been a tripleplay, then people would never have forgotten & it would rank in the best of alltime.

Whatever is most recent in people's minds tends to be the greatest--just human nature. The problem with "greatest plays" is that they tend to be taken out of context.

For Mets fans, like myself, Chavez's catch proved that the Mets were destined to win this game, it was inevitable, the magic was back--NOT!

What I'm trying to say is that the catch will not be remembered as well as it would have been had the Mets won. Mets win--and it becomes part of New York sports folklore. But the Mets lost--and it will end up as a minor footnote.

That's just the way history--any kind of history--works.

when chavez came up in the 6th inning with the bases loaded & 2 outs, i says, this is so storybook. i could just feel it, he was going to be a huge, huge hero. WRONG. he swings at the first pitch and hits a lazy fly to edmonds.

Chavez will always have a place in my heart...
Had $1200 on a 6-team parlay, last day of May I think it was, paid over $16,000...
Two obscenely tough tennis matches, both squeakers in my favor, two fairly easy baseball winners, a nail-biting St. Louis Cardinals victory in extra innings, so it all boils down to Pedro vs. Brandon Webb that night, what a pitching duel it was...Final Mets 1 Arizona 0 in 13 innings...
Game-winning hit by Chavez, made the cover of next day's NY Post:party:
And although I'm not a particularly religious man, the next morning I went to Holy Name Cathedral and sat there for over two hours, just thinking about things.
