How much high-speed internet do we really need?

My only option for internet here is Cox. They just increased the price $2 because the speed is now 7Mb instead of 4Mb. My question is does anyone really need that much speed? I called them up complaining about my $130 cable bill and they said they offer a plan with 1.5Mb for less than half the cost of the 7Mb I get. My question is who really needs more than 1.5Mb anyways?

People who download massive amounts of streaming porn (ie 50% of the people on this site)

More speed is needed for people who like to play video games over the internet (it makes a huge difference) and for people who watch video content over the net. Downloading movies also requires speed, unless you don't mind waiting for 8 hours for a download.

video games are really helped by low latency - the speed upgrades he's getting are cap upgrades so they won't affect his speeds with that high of a cap.

Mostly just the massive file downloads or streaming anything, like hitman says.

Personally I've got 100Kbps up and 1000kbps down and could use more.

Yes. I've got 8mbps down/1mbps up and I'd like it to be 100x that. I want streaming HDTV on demand. I want to be able to send the whole Beatles discography to my bro in a couple of seconds.

Etc, etc. Net bandwidth is more important than processing power, to me anyway.

Agree with hitman, I have the increased high speed option from my ISP due to downloading xbox games myself.

I rarely stream anything more than XM music and my online gaming is limited to poker. My downloads are almost always just music. What are the chances I will be disappointed by 1.5?

It can always be faster

Until you can shoot a DVD over at instant speed, it can be improved

1.5 is fine for poker and audio streams. If you only download a song or an album at a time, it's more than adequate.

Depends on what else you're doing. For that kind of change, it's worth it-especially if you're streaming anything.

The cable\dsl war is so hot, they can't raise the prices, so they're raising the bandwidth-regardless of whether you need it or not.

It also makes a big difference if you visit a lot of sites. I was recently over at a friends house who still has aol dial up. I was ready to pull all of my hair out after going to 2 websites and waiting for the graphics to load.

I'm glad those dial up days are over.

Problem with DSL is then you have to get a frickin phone line. I go with VOIP. I hate local phone companies with a passion, I am so happy not having to cut them a check for anything.

Not to mention about a year ago I was told I wasn't quite close enough to get DSL. I'm sure they will be calling when they expand that capacity and maybe I will bargain with Cox again at that time.

I used to have DSL for around 30$ a month

I now pay 60$ for comcast cable

It is too much a speed difference to not pay the extra

8mbps down is more or less enough for everything you need to do these days...

uploads at 1mpbs are the real problem for sharing everything

Until you can stream 6.1 DTS in HDTV with an equivalent wifi vehicle to any set you own, the day a movie is released to theatres, the technology has tons of room to grow.

Playing poker and using aim while watching a blocky 5 minute short on youtube is nifty, but it isnt the tops.
