It really brings up so many issues about baseball and its history.

-OK, it's technically cheating, but do you really, really care? Isn't there a kind of charm to this kind of cheating (same with corking bats, etc...) now that we're in the steroid age? It's just so old school. Remember George Brett and the pine tar bat--doesn't it all seem so innocent?

-Does this kind of cheating really give the player a significant advantage, or is it mostly mental once the other teams suspects. I remember watching Gaylord Perry on nationally televised games and he looked like he had Tourette's Syndrome the way he touched his glove, the bill of his cap, and behind his ears. He had a mental edge just making the other team think about it. And he's in the Hall of Fame. Nobody seems too pissed at him--an acknowedged cheater! Good ol' Gaylord Perry, everyone says.

-Is LaRussa not calling it out because he'd be a hypocrite--and he knows it? It's not like the Cardinals have such an innocent reputation in this regard over the last few years.

-I don't think this is bad publicity for baseball. People will watch Roger's next start to see if they can "catch" him cheating. You can't catch steroid use by watching it on TV.
