Usually the cars manual will say if they need higher octane. Most will be fine on 87.

All cars will run on the cheap stuff. Expensive cars will perform better with premium.

cheap gas from no name gas stations can be dirtier, which can lead to shorter engine life or deteriorated performance. You get what you pay for. the brand name of your gas can mean more than the octane level. but you should buy the octane level recommended by the instruction manual.

i have a "Luxury" car and i fill it up with regular because the car manual says i can. Most people think i should fill it up with premium, but the extra savings on each filling makes a difference. I also don't notice much of a difference when i go from premium to regular.

So like the others say, only use the good stuff if you have to.

My BMW gets regular because I am a cheap bastard. Sometimes after a good day I will splurge and get mid grade.

That is the worst thing you can do for a car. You have to stick with one grade of gas no matter what you choose. Your car gets used to a certain grade, changing it all the time causes serious long term effects.
