Carpenter's intensity could be at all-time high in Game 7

ST. LOUIS—He will start on short rest for the second time in his career—both times coming this month—and with a chance to pitch his team to a World Series title. Expect to see the Chris Carpenter scowl and attitude in full effect in Game 7 against the Texas Rangers on Friday night.

When TV cameras caught Carpenter screaming a few choice expletives in the direction of the Texas Rangers' Mike Napoli on Monday night, the typical reaction was: OK, so that's what Nyjer Morgan and Zack Greinke are talking about.

All Napoli had done was end the Rangers' sixth inning with a 400-foot fly out with two runners on. He didn't do anything to show up anyone and he has not had any history with Carpenter.

So why did Napoli warrant a "(Expletive) yeah! You piece of (expletive)! (Expletive) you!" from the St. Louis Cardinals' righthander?

After the game, Napoli told reporters he had no idea what prompted it and that he was confused by Carpenter's reaction.

What happened was just Carpenter being Carpenter. Professional and accommodating off the mound, he gets caught up in the moment on it. He has been known to glare down opposing hitters who have the audacity to question a called third strike when he is pitching, and then say he was unaware he did so.

On Tuesday, he talked like he didn't know cameras had caught his tirade. "Did somebody say something about me yelling at somebody," he asked.

Those who have watched him over the years said that Carpenter actually was yelling at himself and not at Napoli. Carpenter did not deny—or confirm—that.

"Stuff Happens," he said.

Carpenter is just an ass. Plain and simple. I would hate to have to play with him.
