I'm currently going through college and very interested in the sports gambling industry and casino industry. I have been betting on sports for a few years but I'm not very sure on the steps to take to become a linesmaker, get a job in a casino (higher). Next year I'm probably going to go to UNLV in the Gaming Management. If anyone knows how to get started or has worked previously in Las Vegas any information would be appreciated. I'm interested in getting started now in fact and if anyone knows how to get a job. I love sports just as much as everyone else on this website and I'm hoping for it to be apart of my future. Thanks in advance....CapNWatch

I'm sure many will direct you to me with this post, so I will chime in.

If you are going to college, there are much more lucrative careers than in the Vegas sports industry. If you really feel you want to accept a near minimum wage job in a work environment where you are dealing with those well below your education level and in a business that is declining, then please look me up.

Contact gaming establishments and see if any are offering internships in your field(s) of interest…then go from there.

I will echo that and add being a sports fan and working in the industry are very far apart. For me, the more I have worked in it, the less of a fan I have become. I dont even care to bet at this point anymore.

Do not get me wrong, you can make a career of it, it just takes a long time and you need to know the right people at that. In fact I am mentoring someone in the buisness right now whom came here under your same circumstance and is finding the out the truth of what GD said.

He will be going to get his sports managment masters at UNLV this spring and will work the job he has now for what it is. He is no longer wanting to really work behind the counter like he thought.

Its a tough life and you see a lot of ugly things. Not all the time mind you, but it adds up and takes it toll. BIG TIME.

You may want to pull up my sportsbook stories from the 90's thread and read it for further insights. Just do a fourm search using Sportsbook stories, just like I just typed it. My could you live this life from the bottom up is right there with it.

I know many here will not like this, but become a Sports Tout:

Advantages:

Should be making more than 100k by year 3
Summers off
Great work enviroment

Disadvantages:
Highly Immoral
Have to work early during the weekends
Might get arrested (longshot)

ADT, that is going from the pan into the fire and way worse of a life overall.

just what the world needs more touts but, seriously ask yourself is there anything else I enjoy or am good at? Being a stock broker is legal and probabley less dangerous then being a sports tout IMO but, just out of my morbid curiousity how did tyhese sports touts become sports touts? always wanted to ask that but, didn't know where bto post it

Thanks for all the input. I'm not interested in being a tout at all...the pressure, and the moral issue is just not for me. I'm not even really sure what jobs there are for sports people out there. This post has been very helpful. I'm definitley going to try and finish college and get my degree. Thanks and more thoughts always welcome. I'm going to look up the sportsbook stories from the 90's now.

CapN, if I were you I would try and hook up an internship with a sports team and maybe hook on with them or the league after school. That way you could use your degree and still do something related to sports.
I don't want to sour you on Vegas, but to be honest it is really not the best avenue for a sports fan as far as employment.

Working in CASINO's 15 years I agree with GD 100%. I'm lucky to have stumbled on a good gig currently but that can change at any moment in this BIZ. You may have to move around a bit and pay your dues at times, some good jobs to be found outside of Vegas btw (not in SB's). But I do something for a living that I have a passion for (which the majority of casino workers lost years ago) and love the people and the action.

GOOD LUCK -- CW keep us updated on your ventures.
