Tiger Woods to Skip PGA Tour Championship in Atlanta Next Week
By Aaron Kuriloff
Oct. 27 (Bloomberg) -- Top-ranked golfer Tiger Woods said he will skip this year's U.S. PGA Tour Championship for the first time in his career, citing mental and physical fatigue.

Woods, who has won six straight events on the Tour, said he needed more time to recover after playing seven of the previous nine events. The tournament starts Nov. 2 in Atlanta.

``I want to stress to everyone that missing the Tour Championship for the first time in my pro career is in no way a reflection of my feelings toward the event,'' Woods, 30, said in a statement posted on his Web site.

Woods, who won the British Open and PGA Championship this season, took a two-month break after the Masters Tournament as his father succumbed to cancer. He returned to competition at June's U.S. Open, where he missed the cut at a major for the first time as a professional.

``We are disappointed and recognize that our fans and sponsors will be disappointed as well,'' Ed Moorhouse, the Tour's co-chief operating officer, said of Wood's decision on the organization's Web site. ``While we will miss Tiger in Atlanta this year, we understand from Tiger that he is excited about competing in next year's FedEx Cup.''

The FedEx Cup begins next season as a new format for determining the Tour's season champion, and includes the Tour Championship.

Woods is the third player to skip the season-ending tournament at East Lake Country Club in Atlanta, which functions as an all-star match among the top 30 money winners on the tour. Phil Mickelson, the Masters champion, has said he is finished playing this season. Stephen Ames withdrew with a back injury.

Woods said he planned on playing in the HSBC Championship Tournament in Shanghai beginning Nov. 10, before heading to Hawaii to defend his title at the PGA Grand Slam of Golf. He plans to conclude the season at his own event, the Target World Challenge, in California this December.

``I'm confident that this extended break will help me recharge my batteries for the 2007 season,'' he said.

THERE HAS TO BE MORE TO THIS ........WHY IN THE WORLD WOULD HE MISS AN EVENT OF THIS IMPORTANCE?!?!

Granted, not a MAJOR, but still a top flight tourney by most standards.

I guess he could have just over extended himself and could be tired at this stage of the season.

he certainly doesnt need the money, so if he doesnt want to play, why bother

issue also is since he has been taking time off lately, he would have to practice hard to get up to speed for one event, then take more time off. pretty pointless really.

athletes need an off-season and Woods works very hard during the season

Two weeks off isn't enough for him? Maybe he's right; walking four miles in a day for four days in a row can be pretty grueling, especially for a thirty year old.

What a joke, most players play just about every week all summer just to try to keep their cards. Tiger can't play 8 out of 10 weeks and then take a couple months off?

The guy has had a rough mental year, overextended himself by playing so many events recently and prob wants to bang his wife.

Its not a major, just pisses off the TV and tourney sponsors.

Woods has played 15 PGA events, Vijay played 25, some golfers got in over 30. How can he honestly say he's too tired to go out and play one more before a couple months off?

pretty sure his father dying, his game being at the point where he missed his first cut in a major, then the work to get back to his "A" game really did take a toll on the guy this year, i think he deserves a break...

Saying hes tired is just an excuse cause he dont want to play and he cant think of anything better to say, just come out and say I dont want to play.

Its like back when I was in school and we had a teacher that would come around before class and check to see if we did our homework and everybody who didnt have it done had this big excuse why they didnt do it and what not then when she got to me she'd say wheres your homework I'd say I didnt do it and she'd say why and I'd say I didnt want to do it, I mean that was the truth and it was realy everyone elses reason too but anyway theres realy no moral to my story I was just to lazy to make up an excuse.
