Can any one explain the MLS playoff rules? How does the game finish 2-1, then go into a shootout?

Diego Gutierrez and Andy Herron scored on the second and third attempts for Chicago.
Chicago, which won the opening match in the semifinal series 1-0, took a 1-0 lead in the 18th minute Saturday night when Nate Jaqua made a sliding shot off a Justin Mapp cross out of the right wing.
New England tied it at 1-1 in the 41st minute when Twellman, New England's all-time leading goal-scorer, slammed in a shot from 12 yards out.
New England took a 2-1 lead and tied the series' goal total at 2-2, when Patrick Noonan banged in a rebound in the 58th minute.
New England will meet the winner of the D.C United-New York Red Bulls Eastern Conference semifinal Sunday.
