I just read Jalen Rose got cut and is slated to make $16.9 million this year. An unwanted $17 million man. Sports salaries, especially in hoops and bases are just plain nuts. While CEOs are definitely paid too much, at least most of them actually work long hours.

its ridiculous and makes we question democracy (market system's) as we know it....

these bozos making this obscene money is just out of whack with reality.

Same goes with actors, we never talk about them, but payments like 30 million per movie and such is just ridiculous.

This is why the move to get Jalen by the Knicks just baffles me. THey were pretty much out of contention for the playoffs and have young talent that needs to be developed and they go out and get a past his prime veteran. If Jalen had a small contract its not a bad deal because he can definetley help your team, but when you are very unlikely to even make the playoffs it just blows my mind why you would cover the 17mil/yr deal. i know NY has a big market but jalen rose should only be dealt to someone who desperately needs him in the playoffs. one of the worst deals ever, makes no sense from any way you look at it.

If an actor (Tom Cruise) purely by name recognition alone is an automatic extra 100 million to a movie, how much should they be paid?

They were paid what the market was willing to pay at that point.

This may be true, but I think almost all sports fans agree these ridiculous guaranteed amounts are horrible for the game. Once the guy gets enough service to get a max contract, he can cruise and be set. In both NBA and MLB the union won't give an inch, but they just encourage the "contract year" players and that pisses fans off. Lets see how good Tim Thomas ends up being after being a loaf half his career, but getting a fat contract for 3 months of work. Or how about these impossibly old guys demanding 5 years when they would be lucky to get 2 years out of their bodies. We all pay for it in higher prices if we want to go watch games and we all pay for it in more commercialization of the games.

For the most part actors do one film at a time, some get signed for three, maybe tops five film contract. An NBA player like Rose gets a seven year contract and you have no way out. It is the owners fault though in the end, they are idiots for some of the contracts they give out.
Look at the NFL Reggie Bush never did anything, he got about 25 million guranteed, if he blows out his knee tomorrow he keeps that money and the Saints are screwed.
If it wasnt for gambling, I wouldnt give a damn about any pro sports.

Its a voluntary market. I used to go to see the Kings at the old Forum..get decent seats for $40...fun night out would cost me and a bud maybe $75 each. Now it's $300+ each. For $600 it's not worth it to me, so I don't pay it (often) and waste my entertainment money on something else.

Like I said, no law says the teams have to cater to the fans who can't afford to go. As long as there are 20,000 people willing to pay and watch what passes as basketball, there is no incentive to cater to previous attending fans.

Sucks for many - welcome to capitalism.
