mrd, everyone is different, but I would buy him a car now. I would buy him a responsible and still yet nifty car (as you can afford right now.)
You don't need to buy him the newest mustang or whatever, but you can find three choices that you like which provide three or four things 1.) a small bit of cool factor 2.) gas economy 3.) quality 4.) safety
You pick out three choices that YOU like and feel good about as a father and you let him decide among the three. That is just my opinion.
I, personally, would recommend the 2004 model below....

This Accord comes as a four-door sedan and is the EX trim model. It comes with air conditioning, a height-adjustable driver seat, a CD player, cruise control and power windows, locks and mirrors. This top line EX models gets a bounty of features, including a power sunroof, alloy wheels and steering wheel-mounted stereo controls.
Driving the front wheels is a 160-horsepower, 2.4-liter inline four cylinder engine. Most buyers will be well served by the four-cylinder; it's smooth and quiet (like most Honda engines) and offers up enough power for nearly all situations. This four-cylinder engine is matched with a five-speed automatic transmission.
Safety is paramount in a family sedan and the Accord doesn't disappoint. In NHTSA crash testing, the Accord coupe and sedan received a perfect five stars for protection against frontal impacts. The Accord coupe has also been given five stars for side-impact crash protection. In IIHS testing, the Accord earned a "Good" rating (again, the best possible) for its performance in the 40-mph frontal offset crash test. Side airbags are either optional or standard.
