specifically the heavyweight division. I don't know where the line to heavyweight is ( around 200 lbs ?) Seems the dominant guy is around 5-11 to maybe 6-2 in height, and maybe 210-230 lbs. Guys like Ali, Foreman, Holyfield, Tyson, etc.

Why can't an athletic type ( like an NBA player) that's 6-10 or better, and closer to 300, just destroy these guys ?

Hard for the little guy to hit the big guy in the head, huge reach-weight advantage for the Shaq sized guy, or a power-forward type that's younger and fitter than the aging giant.

If you take a top level athlete, for example in the NFL, and train him in boxing as much as he was trained in football then he would dominate. The athletic level in boxing right now is very low.

Its all about handspeed. You cant teach that, you either have it or you dont. The guys in the NFL would be too bulky and slow, and it would take years to get them into boxing shape.

Not enough 6'10" guys getting into boxing, I think. If you're 6'10", you play basketball. If you're 6'10" and you fail to make a basketball career, you try boxing next and you also fail because of a total lack of boxing experience.

A skilled, very tall, lean guy who would be trained as a boxer from a very young age would probably do well against today's average heavy (6'2", 225lbs or so)

The Klitschkos are/were quite good at using their size & reach against smaller foes. Vitali destroyed just about everyone but Lewis and Wlad will probably dominate the division for the next several years now that he seems to have sorted his stamina problem.

As a slow white guy I agree. I played hoops well until I played against quick black guys. They were beter players than I was. The main difference was quickness, they had it and I did not. So led my jouney down the gambling hiway. As a 5'11" dude I did dunk a basketball though.

What I was trying to say is if you take an NFL caliber athlete and train him in boxing (starting at a young age) then you would have something.

If he started young, he wouldn't have the same physical makeup as an NFL player. I would bet the hand speed would be there for some of them. Hand speed is athleticism. You are correct that it is not taught.

As a guy that met you, I'd lay 100-1 that you can't dunk a baketball today.

I say why not put one up against a highly trained wing chun practitioner. They'll show what speed and power truly is.

I remember Ed "too tall" Jones trying it, but he's small by modern standards.

Can't there be a 6-6, 6-7 guy with athlitic ability, and hand speed, all in one package ? The reach would be killer !
