I flew out of Hartsfield on Friday and learned for the second time that traffic on 85 is awful no matter what time you drive through. I am landing tomorrow afternoon at around 4 PM and driving north of 85 towards South Carolina. Is there any way that I can go around all of that downtown mess and hook back up with I-85 north of the city? 2 hour bumper-to-bumper traffic is not something I want to deal with tomorrow.

If you're landing at Hartsfield at 4PM (meaning you'll get on the road at 4:45 or so at best, there is really no good way at that hour (short of a helicopter) to get north of the perimeter on 85.
You could avoid 85 in the city by taking 285 and picking up Peachtree Industrial Blvd. near Chamblee heading north which then takes you to Buford where you can get on 85 North heading toward South Carolina. But 285 is no picnic at that hour either.
You could also take 285 to 400 North and get off at exit 14, head east toward Buford and pick up 85 North there as well. But again, 400 North is pretty bad at that time as well.
There are many routes to take but they're all pretty bad.

Wow traffic in Houston must be real bad becuase when I was in Atlanta I didnt think the traffic was that bad. I have also been to LA and let me tell you if you havent been to LA there is no where even close to the traffic problems they have there. 4 hours is a good day in rush hour. I think that is why they are 3 hours behind the East coast becuase of the traffic gives them time to caught up. That Atalnta airport is also a montser had to conect there once and just barley made the connection that place is huge.
Glad you made it. The only way to fly into Hartsfield is to arrive at absolutely no later than 3PM. I tell any family or friends coming down here that if their flight gets in after 3PM I will not pick them up at the airport. I made by best friend take the MARTA train from the airport out to Buckhead to meet me because his flight got in at 4:45.
The Metro Atlanta are desperately needs a second airport located north of the city. So many people have moved from the downtown area to north of the perimeter that having the only airport south of the downtown area (in a bad neighborhood too) is a recipe for traffic nightmares.

I was down there several times this past summer and although there can be a decent amount of traffic throughout the day, it didn't seem as bad as DC and its suburbs. I know they were widening some of the highways down there and adding on but was that just a bandaid over a gunshot wound????
Thanks for reminding me of MARTA. Used to do it back in the day, getting on at Chamblee. From what I can remember, parking used to be really bad there. Nothing but that little lot in front of the entrance to the terminal. In those days they didn't like you parking there for more than 24 hours either. Have they built any kind of parking structure there?

The best parking is at the North Springs MARTA station (which is the last stop on the North Line). Huge garage and long-term parking is fine. $7 a day if I recall. You end up just north of the perimeter. I think the last stop on the Northeast Line, Doraville, also has long term paking but fewer spaces. If you are getting on 85N then Doraville is your best bet. If you are getting on 400N then North Springs is the best stop. North Springs definitely has a garage but last time I was at Doraville it didn't.
