This may sound stupid, but I've always wondered why the trophy is boxing is a belt. Is reason other than the winning bloke is half-naked and has gloves on?

I've always wondered that too. Thanks for starting the thread Mr. D.

I'd rather get the whole belt than just the belt buckle they give out in the Rodeo

And P.S. Not a stupid question, no such thing.

Good question. I sent it to boxing trainer/TV analyst Russ Anber - we might have an answer in the next edition of "In This Corner" on TSN, would be cool.

Obviously, it's hard to grab anything while wearing gloves (the thumbs are stitched to the rest of the glove) so a belt makes more sense, but there has to be another reason.

I can find the link if really interested but I will give you a short version.
Richard Fox was the publisher of the Police Gazette in 1880. Fox was insulted at Harry Hills Saloon by the great John L Sullivan. Because of Richard Fox's hatred of Sullivan, He started awarding the " Police Gazette Diamond Black Belt" to those fighters He considered World Champions. He defiantly awarded the Belt to Jake Kilrain but in 1889, John L Sullivan beat Kilrain to capture the " Belt". In 1922 Nat Fleisher founded Ring Magazine and the practice of awarding Belts to Champions was continued.

Speaking only for myself of course, no need of a link for me, you sound like you know what you are talking about. I have been wondering about that for a long time. Thank you.
