Previews for both games

DATE & TIME: Saturday, November 7th, 6:30 p.m. (et).
FACTS & STATS: Site: Comcast Center (17,950) -- College Park, Maryland. Television: ESPNU. Home Record: New Orleans 0-0, Vermont 0-0. Away Record: New Orleans 0-0, Vermont 0-0. Neutral Record: New Orleans 0-0, Vermont 0-0. Conference Record: New Orleans 0-0, Vermont 0-0. Series Record: First-ever meeting.
GAME NOTES: The Vermont Catamounts and the New Orleans Privateers are set to square off as part of the 2K Sports College Hoops Classic, benefiting Coaches vs. Cancer. The winner of this game will take on either Maryland or Hampton tomorrow night. Vermont returns all five starters from a team that made its fourth straight America East Conference Tournament championship game appearance a year ago. The 2006-07 team was recently picked to finish third in the league. The Catamounts have dropped their last three season openers, a streak the club will attempt to halt in this, the first college basketball game of the season. As for New Orleans, it is coming off a disappointing 2005-06 campaign that saw the team win only 10 of 29 games. Members of the Sun Belt Conference, the Privateers will be led into action by first-year head coach Buzz Williams. This game marks the first-ever meeting between Vermont and New Orleans on the hardwood.
Mike Trimboli is considered the top offensive performer for Vermont, and the fact that he is just a sophomore suggests that there is plenty of room for improvement. The point guard showed a great deal of maturity a year ago, and he was rewarded by being named to the preseason All-AEC team. As a rookie, Trimboli scored 14.0 ppg to go along with a league-leading 5.3 apg. Junior Kyle Cieplicki and sophomore Colin McIntosh figure to bring a great deal of energy and athleticism to the floor. As for senior leadership, Martin Klimes and Chris Holm bring plenty to the lineup. Keep an eye on Holm, as he has the size (6-11) to make a major impact.
Vermont figures to have its hands full trying to defend New Orleans' superstar Bo McCalebb, one of the nation's most explosive scorers. Last season, McCalebb was held out of action due to injury, as he was granted a medical redshirt. Now back in the fold, the talented guard has intentions of playing at the high level that enabled him to score 22.6 ppg as a sophomore. While McCalebb will clearly be the focus of the offense, there are other talented performers in the lineup. Jamie McNeilly, a Third Team All-Sun Belt selection, paced the Privateers in assists last year with 5.7 per game.
These two teams appear to be evenly matched, so expect a close game from start to finish. New Orleans seems to be the smart pick based solely on the ability of McCalebb to take over a game. Sports Network Predicted Outcome: New Orleans 71, Vermont 67

GAME NOTES: After starting out as a four-team event based in Atlantic City, New Jersey, the 2K Sports College Hoops Classic has evolved into a 16-team event that begins at four separate sites before landing in New York City. Maryland, one of the host schools, kicks off its 2006-07 season with a meeting against the Hampton Pirates in College Park. Last season, the Terrapins put together a 19-13 record and were an even 8-8 against the rest of the ACC, which left the squad sixth in the league standings at the end of the campaign. After beating Georgia Tech in the conference tournament (82-64) in Greensboro, North Carolina, the Terps bowed to Boston College (80-66) and were left to play in the NIT where the Manhattan Jaspers sent them packing in the first round following an 87-84 decision. As for the Pirates, members of the MEAC, they finished in a three-way tie for fifth place in their conference after putting together a 10-8 mark. Overall, Hampton was an average 16-16 after opening the 2005-06 campaign with seven losses in eight games. The Pirates won their third MEAC Tournament title last season, but lost to Monmouth in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament. The Terps took part in this event back in 2001 when they were ranked second in the nation and were defeated by Arizona (71-67) before taking out 16th-ranked Temple (82-74) in the consolation game. With respect to the all-time series between these two schools, Maryland holds a 1-0 edge over the Pirates courtesy of a 108-58 blowout at home back in 2003. The winner of this matchup will face the winner of the Vermont/New Orleans battle on Wednesday for the right to advance to Madison Square Garden next week for the semifinals.
After making it to the NCAA Tournament last year, and then being blown out by Monmouth, head coach Bobby Collins was handed his walking papers as the team finished off a string of five games in seven days. Collins had led the program to the MEAC Championship game three times in four years, yet the Pirates said a change was still in order. In steps Clemson assistant Kevin Nickelberry who was already an assistant with fellow MEAC squad Howard. For his first season at the helm, Nickelberry has just one returning player worth noting, that being junior guard Rashad West who averaged 10.1 ppg a season ago. West shot under 40 percent from the field for a team that was hitting only 41.4 percent overall. Fellow guard Junior Pehoua is the only senior on the roster for Hampton and he too had issues with his field goal shooting (.366), en route to a mere 4.0 ppg. Cousin Lionel Pehoua has some experience with the squad as well, but his 3.4 ppg a season ago is nothing to get excited about. Not only that, he also recorded a mere six assists in 30 games, while turning the ball over 35 times. Junior forward Adrian Woodard (4.4 ppg, 4.1 rpg) could see significant action early on, but that's only until freshmen like Mike Freeman and Matt Pilgrim get settled in along the front line. Freshman Oluwaseyi Oseni will probably hold down the center position, simply because he's the tallest player on the team at 6-10. The early departure of point guards Rodrick Coleman and Matthew Williams will take some time to get over, put eventually the Pirates should get their game in order.
Maryland head coach Gary Williams enters his 18th season in College Park and his 29th as a college coach overall, with a program that finished 19-13 the last two years and as a result failed to make it into the NCAA Tournament. It was just five short years ago that the Terps and Williams won the big prize with a national title, but in 2006-07 the squad will have to operate under the radar for some time before the national press gives them enough credit and recognition. Senior forward Ekene Ibekwe is the top returning scorer for the group, putting up 11.1 ppg while starting 30 of the 32 games the team played in 2005-06. Ibekwe was also the team's leader in rebounding (6.6 rpg) and was second in blocked shots (43), which is why one can overlook the fact that he had just 30 assists and a total of 69 turnovers. The seasoned vet shot 50.6 percent from the field, as the unit hit only 44.8 percent, but was just 62.3 percent accurate at the free-throw line. Senior guard D.J. Strawberry, who ranks 14th on the school's all-time steals list with 133, is the only returning player to have started all 32 games last season. A defensive presence every time down the floor, Strawberry recorded a team-best 58 steals a year ago and was fifth on the team in scoring with 10.3 ppg. Son of former major leaguer Darryl Strawberry, D.J. accounted for 128 assists. Senior guard Mike Jones (10.5 ppg) provided the program with a real threat from out on the perimeter where he converted 41.5 percent, even though he connected on just 35.5 percent in league affairs for the Terps.
Hampton is not a team that typically gets to play in front of big crowds and that's exactly what's going to happen tonight when the Terps open up their season at home. Adding to the stress of being on the road for the season opener, the Pirates are still getting to know each other, so give them a few weeks before it all starts to come together. Sports Network Predicted Outcome: Maryland 85, Hampton 63

Do not lay that number with MD. They only beat a D-2 team by 1 pt in an exhibition game. They've looked awful so far. If anything, take the points.

What a coincidence...right on the lines.

Journeyman you are confusing me. Where are you getting a final from? Every site I go to has that game starting at 8:30 Eastern.
