My tvs are coming in Friday, but my satellite service isnt coming in til next Thursday. Best Buy is brining one HD box thought wtih my TVs that they threw in free. My question is can I plug an antennae into that HD box and pull in my local channels in HD without having satellite service? Or will I just be able to plug the antennae into the TVs and pull in HD? Maybe a stupid question?

I thought this was not possible myself!!!

but recently, someone told me you can get HDTV through the airwaves without paying for satelite or Cable.

I was shocked!!!

but apparently it is possible.

I wonder, do you need a special HD antenna for this? I thought I heard that....

(not that it matters, as if im going to cancel cable!!!!)

You can indeed get HD local channels for free, but it will have to be directly through your TV if it is HD-ready. There is no special antenna needed, just a UHF/VHF one.

I don't think you will be able to initialize the directv box until you get service.

One thing to note, use antennaweb.org to find out where your towers are. Many antennas are directional, meaning you have to point them at the specific antenna tower. Use that website to figure out what type you'll need. Read the reviews on the particular antennas, and make a good choice. There is a HUGE difference in quality between a good antenna and a shitty one (note: not all expensive ones are good, and not all cheap ones are bad)
