WASHINGTON (CNN) -- This is probably not what President Bush had in mind when he stressed bipartisanship after the Democratic Party's midterm elections sweep.

A key Senate Republican has joined Democrats in opposing one of Bush's initiatives for the lame-duck Congress: John Bolton's nomination as U.S. ambassador to the United Nations.

With leaders from both parties promising a new bipartisan Washington, Bush began efforts to get two of his most controversial decisions approved before the Democrats take over. (Watch reason to hope for national unity -- 2:16 Video)

But Republican Sen. Lincoln Chafee, who was defeated in this week's election, said he would block Bolton's nomination.

Chafee, a member of the Foreign Relations Committee, told reporters that he did not believe Bolton's nomination would move forward without his support.

"The American people have spoken out against the president's agenda on a number of fronts, and presumably one of those is on foreign policy," the Rhode Island moderate told The Associated Press.

The committee, dominated 10-8 by Republicans, requires a majority vote to send the nomination to the Senate floor. A tie would be the same as a no vote.

Last year Democrats launched a heated debate about Bolton as they blocked a vote on his nomination.

They complained he gave the Senate false information when he failed to note on a questionnaire that he had been questioned by the department's inspector general as part of a joint inquiry by the State Department and CIA into allegations that Iraq attempted to obtain uranium from Niger in Africa.

The State Department acknowledged the error in Bolton's statement.

Also, Sen. George Voinovich, an Ohio Republican, took to the floor and read a list of complaints by Bolton's subordinates who said he had a reputation of bullying his colleagues, taking facts out of context and exaggerating intelligence.

Carl Ford, the former chief of the State Department's Bureau of Intelligence and Research, called Bolton "a quintessential kiss-up, kick-down sort of guy" and a "serial abuser" of subordinates.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

It's becoming the end of the rubberstamp era. Good for Lincoln Chafee on blocking Bolton, the Bush stamp.

"Key Republican" and Lincoln Chaffee in the same sentence. :missingte

The RINO that voted with the Dems seemingly as often as he voted with the Republicans.

The man that helped hand the Senate over to the Democrats.

Bye, bye Lincoln Chaffee :missingte

So why won't the Democrats allow the man come up for vote again? What are they afraid of?:pucking:

There certainly is a lot of bullshit going on.:103631605

You seem to be happy that you have Sheldon Whitehouse as his replacement. You seem happy that Chafee lost - forgetting the fact that had he won, it would have been a 50-50 split - and you call him a RINO?

Chafee wasn't one of the SHEEP who followed the sheppard, and the bad news is that Sheldon Whitehouse is. LC was campaigning in a state where Bush has a 23% approval rating but he made a fight of it.

As for handing over the Senate, there is a lot of blame to go around - and from what I see, Lincoln Chafeee isn't even in the Top 10.

Cincy, let me make it clear.

I wanted him to win in an effort to retain the Senate.

He is absolutely a Rino, for this there is no debate.

He lost, good riddens. If I had to choose a Republican to lose, it would be bye, bye Lincoln Chafee.

Before the election, he promised he would allow Bolten's nomination reach the floor for a vote, he lied. Bye, bye Lincoln Chafee.

Another poster just posted that he is thinking about becoming a Democrat. If true, can there be any debate? Bye, bye Lincoln Chafee.

With Republicans like Lincoln Chafee, who would need Democrats? Bye, bye Lincoln Chafee.

The CNN story didn't even mention his name until the 4th paragraph. If it were a true Republican, his name would have made the HEADLINES. The truth is in the details.

I'm still waiting to hear why the Democrats won't allow a vote on Bolten. Surely, if he's so baaad, he won't be approved. Why don't they bring the issue to the Senate floor where all americans can hear how baaaaaad this nomination is?

DUDE! Are you serious. Chafee shouldn't even have R next to his name... By the way, there is a reason he was defeated.....Republicans didn't even want to vote for him... This is a joke right...

He is absolutely a Rino, for this there is no debate.

If he has ANY chance of winning in Rhode Island, he has to be a moderate - now for some that is a RINO - but that is how the Libbies used to think until this election ... they never allowed DINOs to run and they kept losing. This election, they let people like Casey and Webb run for Senator ... and they hit the jackpot.

Now back to Chafee:

If you were in charge of this midterm, and you had a Senator whose seat was endangered, and he was running in a state where Bushie had a 23% rating, what would you do to make sure he reatined the seat?

Would you put him through a battering primary when Whitehouse had no primary?
Would you force Chafee to spend millions just fighting off a Republican?
Would you let Laffey run a negative campaign that bruised Chafee's image?
Would you do nothing to bring back the Laffey supporters into his camp and keep calling him a RINO?

Bushie helped the Democrats beat Chafee by allowing Laffey to not only challenge him, but also run a negative campaign - there is no doubt about it. The fact is that there is a LOT of bad blood between Bushie and Chafee. In such a scenario, you can't expect Chafee to be loyal to a persn who is a major reason why he lost his Senate seat.

Dear Political Scientists:

I don't care if it's Hugo Chaves with a R in front of his name. What I am sure of is John Bolton is out as out as our Neocon at the UN. That's the important part. And that, you right wing geniuses, is a direct cause of the country speaking on Tuesday.

Now and forever John Bolton will not represent the US at the United Nations, aren't elections fun?

Here's what I didn't understand about nominating Bolton the first time around.

(A) If your end goal is to disband the UN, or withdraw from it - then do so. In our relationship with the UN, is Bolton the "jerk boyfriend" whose only role is to act like an asshole long enough that they'll break up with us? If you want us out, gather up the allies and leave already.

(B) If your goal is to shake things up and improve the UN, how can bringing in a person who once shouted that if the top 10 floors of the UN were "taken off" - it wouldn't make a bit of difference? (Nice imagary post 911 NYC by the way - yeesh). Does ANY country have a track record of cooperating with someone who speaks down to them like this? Makes a tough job even harder in my view (unless your goal really was (A) anyway)

Yes, very good post

IMHO Chaos pays, they don't seem none too alarmed about the Chaos in Iraq. It's the old bottom line, and that's just doing great.

We're not completely out of the woods, but I think we just dodged a bullet on Tuesday. And when I say we, I mean anyone who believes in the Constitution.

Boltons riles things up for sure but thats exactly what they need to hear.Putting another appeaser in there only compounds the problem.

Who was in charge up there during the 90s while the UN was shirking its duties? Because Bolton wont roll over for Kofi and Co hes a jerk...lol.The UN has made it a habit of talking down to the leadership in the US for sometime,I cant bring myself to feel pity for them now that someone else is giving them a taste of their own medicine. The noise Bolton is making is only in regards to the lack of urgency the UN has maintained in intiating reform on their own.

IMO just getting rid of them physically and financially isnt a bad idea at all.
