Some of these mom and pop cable outfitters here in SC don't have the capability to turn you off from the office. PHysically disconnection could be the only choice.

Not sure who services Berea though. Charter?

They try to come out and personally disconnect so that they can look for evidence of tampering. They also do it to catch cable stealers in your neighborhood. I was told this by a cable guy.

so you dont go and turn it back on, which isnt hard to do. But that doesnt seem right casue they will have to pay a tech to come drop a new cable at sometime. When i did cable here we would unhook their cable at the pole/box and screw in a "terminator" and you need a special tool to remove it.

Don't know about digital cable, but plain analog cable cannot be turned off at a central office, its just an unencrypted signal running down a coax wire and split to your house. Cable Internet can be turned off at a central office, not by cutting the signal but by blocking/switching your IP address.

AFAIK, even if you have digital cable, the analog stations are still there, correct? i.e. you can still hookup televisions without digital cable tuners.

correct. No way to block an analog signal other than going to the box and physically disconnecting it - same thing for connecting cable. They can disable a box if you're going through that, but plug to TV there's nothing they can do.

If you want to steal cable without letting them see, you can put a splitter in on someone else's line, and tuck it down the tubes where they can't see it. Downside of this is they'll probably prosecute you if they find you doing it this way - much better to go into the between floors space if you're in an apartment complex and split it up there.

Digital is the same. If he came out to your house to do it, then it can't be turned off from any computer or office. If your drop runs from a telephone pole, the only thing that they can cut off from a computer is your digital boxes and modem. A lot of apartments are all ran together and can be shut off from a computer. It is called electroline.

WVU is right on. The fines for cable tampering are very high and that is why they come out some of the time.

90% of all cable lines are connected/disconnected from the pole. The office has the ability to shut down your digital cable box or internet modem but basic cable MUST be shut off from the pole.

I promise you this is the ONLY reason they came out there. They also may have wanted to see if they could get some kind of payment from you (if you owed them) as they are in a big battle with dish companies over keeping subscribers.

ask jose canseco about that one

chances of getting caught with free cable are much higher than using a free to air receiver with a bin, now I agree hacking dish equipment is very risky and I would never do that :missingte

alot of times when a disconnect (paperwork) is handed in to the cable company they will take a percentage of them and go out to audit them, to see if the technician has actually performed the disconnection that he says he has.
