Tigers to trade for Sheffield
Yankees to get three pitching prospects in return
Posted: Friday November 10, 2006 3:11PM; Updated: Friday November 10, 2006 3:40PM
By Jon Heyman, SI.com

The Yankees and Tigers have agreed on a Gary Sheffield trade, SI.com has learned.

In return, the Yankees will acquire highly touted right-hander Humberto Sanchez and Class A pitchers Kevin Whelan and Anthony Claggett, according to a Tigers source.

The Tigers will extend Sheffield's contract for two years beyond the one year and $13 million remaining.

Sheffield, who turns 38 on Nov. 18, wants to play three more seasons. He topped 34 homers and 120 RBIs in each of his first two seasons with the Yankees but missed most of 2006 with a wrist injury from an April collision with Toronto's Shea Hillenbrand. When Sheffield returned in late September, the Yankees shifted him to first base.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

I'm glad to see Gary gone and try to see him show up the Yanks when he comes back to the Bronx.

sanchez is supposedly having some elbow issues but i saw this guy pitch at the futures game in pitt and he looked tremendous... if just one of these 3 turn out to be good it is a great deal for the yanks just to get this guy out of town... more than i thought they would get...

Exactly. I'm just glad the Yanks got some decent prospects for him. I don't understand why the Tigers gave Sheff 2 more years on top of the new contract.

This should end up being a nice deal for the Tigers as it reunites Sheffield with Leyland back when they won a ring with the Marlins (If he can stay healthy).

Sanchez is a highly touted prospect, but has some arm troubles and elbow injuries and that is why you didn't see him pitching during call ups.

The other two guys, nothing special.

Nice.

everybody drink!

love it..could care less if the prospects dont pan out...Sheff is gone, he can take his shit attitude, bum wrist, 38 yrs of age, steroid drama w/ him.

now...as long as the Yanks DONT go after (aka over spend) Zito/Schmidt i will be a very happy fan heading into next season.

Local radio in Boston is reporting that the Sox outbid all contenders for the highly sought after Japanese Pitching Star. It's by no means a done deal, but you can bet that King George will overspend if the Bosox do land this guy. (FYI I may live near Beantown, but I've been a Yankee fan for almost 50 years.)

"why"

where do they need to upgrade? Isn't there an all-star at EVERY position?

Sheffield is one of those players that epitomizes (sp?) why the yankees havent won in the 'free agent years'. The way he whined out of town because the Yanks picked up his option, and didnt offer him an extension - is the exact selfish nature player that explains why I have lost some of my luster as a Yankees fan.

This is very good news.

yes- this is true...they have reportedly bid $40million to get his rights...that money does not include the actual contract...and Scott Boras is looking for only a three year deal...

$40 mill bid + contract money + only three years & becomes free agent

do the math...I dont see the value there...I'm hoping the Yanks dont get into the bidding...Every big contract pitcher has yet to pan out, in the past few years.

They really have to go through building their young arms around Phillip Hughes...and sign mid level free agent pitchers like Ted Lilly...makes more sense from a contractual sense.

The_Man why are the other two bums?? I'm not saying these guys are going to be bonafide stars but their stats arent exactly lacking either. By the way I agree with Rev. Al, Sheff was beginning to become a cancer especially over the last couple of months.

Stats of the other prospects:

Whelan, 22, ranked third among all Tigers' minor-league pitchers with 27 saves in 2006, going 4-1 with a 2.67 ERA in 51 games for the Class-A Lakeland Tigers. He limited opposing hitters to a .178 batting average (33-for-185) and held right-handed hitters to a .158 average (18-for-114). In addition to being named a top prospect in the NY-Penn League following the 2005 season, Whelan also ranked as the 10th-best prospect in the entire Tigers' organization according to Baseball America. He was originally selected by the Tigers in the fourth round of the 2005 draft out of Texas A&M University.

Claggett, 22, posted a 7-2 record with a team-best 0.91 ERA and 14 saves in 51 games for Class-A West Michigan in 2006 (59.1IP, 35H, 7R, 6ER, 20BB, 58K). He held opposing hitters to a .174 batting average (35-for-201) and did not allow a run in his final 10 appearances of the season. He was selected by the Tigers in the 11th round of the 2005 First-Year Player Draft out of UC Riverside.

sheffield will flourish in detroit given he stays healthy and the 3 minor leaguers will tank with the yankees.

its cool guys, lets just take a wait and see approach here for the time being.

thanks.

I don't understand why Detroit did this. They pick up a big contract on a 38 year old guy who was injured all of last year!! On top of it, they still need another Lefty bat. Terrible.

I really think this move may be HUGE for the Yanks down the line. They got rid of a grumpy old man who wasn't going to play nex year for them and got 3 young prospects that have big upsides it seems.

Nice trade Cashman, even he can make a decent move once in a while.

the man, with all due respect how can u make assumptions on these pitchers sanchez is 23 and the other two are 22... what credentials do u have to say that they are all gonna tank in new york?? i think if u had an eye for talent u would be in some sort of scouting position in mlb.... is this the case or are u just on of the following a) a yankee hater or b) a boston/detroit homer... i personally know a coach from the marlin team now with the dodgers that was on the world series team with sheff that told me more than enough sheff stories none of which were easy on the ears if u know what i mean... so even if they TANK as u say they will its still good to get this guy out of town because id much rather have abreu (this is who is taking over for sheff) than sheff and his attitude...

Seems like thwe Tigers could have looked elsewhere but as some others have mentioned these three prospects don't seem to be very good ones.

I think the Yanks end up with Zito.

Sanchez will be a No.2 or No.3 starter in the next two years. He has an upper 90s fastball and above average curve, sinker and change. He also has above average control and a very good strikeout-to-walk ratio.

Young players tend to outperform older more established players in NY because the expectation level is less for them and NYers tend to love the underdog and will rather root for a rookie.

The yanks are smart to get prospects, even if only turns out to be a 3 starter

Charlie

I could be wrong, as I dont follow minor leagues that closely...I thought I read this past summer he blew out his arm and needed shoulder surgery....Isn't he a high risk double A prospect at best ?

I could have the wrong guy...could have sworn it was Sanchez.

If the Yanks get a #3 or even a #4 out of this then it was well worth it...We'll shall see though.
